I am doing a home automation project that is really taking off. I am using a mega162 as my core cpu with at90s2313's at children throughout the house. I also have a wireless link for the control consoles also around the house. My problem is this....the 162/16 can handle 64k of external ram, but the max program memory i can get is 16k. All the 32k devices make no mention of being able to have external ram.

Does atmel have a device that has 32k program internally, 64k data externally, and is compatible with the Dragon?

Do you need the external 64K of ram? May have to switch to something like the M64, but the Dragon will not debug it, you will need a JTAG MK1 or MK2 for it.

Since it is not Dragon freindly I will pick up another stk500, but with the mkII and not the dragon. For the price you cannot beat it.

I have hundreds of 32k ram chips, and I will probably need the space as this project is quite intensive.

When it comes to the program space and data space, I would rather look at it than look for it.

I looked at the M64, very impressive with 64k program andd 4k data, but I would like the 64k of data externally as well. I may get the mkII/500 just to have it in case I go that route though.

You could always bit-bang an external memory access using port pins for address/data. If you're doing assembler it's pretty straight forward. Trying to convince a C compiler how to access your memory routines might be harder.

I am looking to use the parallel ram's and eeproms i currently have. The primary reason is thata the automation system is going to be accessing the sram on a continuous basis using the eeprom only when powerfails to send the sram info to it. I have a battery backup for this in case you are wondering.

the other reason for the parallel external is memory access and loading. It is easy to create .bytes and .equ's to find stuff

A buddy of mine suggested I reuse some old algorithim I used in a CPLD to manage memory by creating a string for the cpld to look for, but that defeats my original ideas

What I described would be parallel external access. The micros that support external memory use one port for high address, and one port for low address and data. There's now reason you can't use any micro with enough port pins and do the same thing in software. The problem becomes a slight slower access and the software overhead to use it. You can still use directives like .byte and .equ to define your memory map, but rather then use ST/LD directly, you would call a routine to perform that memory access for you. This routine would do what the hardware would normally do, that is assert the high address, assert the low address, assert a pin acting as ALE, deassert ALE, assert a pin acting as RD (for a read access), then read the data in on the data port. A similar routine would be developed for the write operation.

But IT HAS the external 64K, as the M128 and ATmega1281/2561..think about it 256K of flash in the same pakage of the Mega64 AND the external 64K ram!!

I am confused. I looked at the m64 and there was no mention of external ram like the m162/m16. Which micro are you suggesting?
