AVR Dudess locks up Windows 7 64 bit PC

I used this fine a couple of years back on the same PC and now when reading fuse bits from an Atmega 328 chip it locks up the PC, no keyboard or mouse (they are USB RF ones). I suspect a driver issue? Any tips please? Is it possible to read and write this chip using the serial port, I never have much luck with USB?

 

The programmers are basic Ebay USB asp's. Extreme Burner (latest version) fails to open the chip at all. The chip works fine in a QRP labs U3S transmitter, so I am confident it's not a dud. Thanks.

A USBasp can be setup to supply power to the target, but if trying to program (read signature successfully first, before trying anything else) it may not be able to power the whole board.

Are you trying with your U3S transmitter powered up or not?

What happens if you forget the GUI and just run avrdude at a command line?

 

(BTW this is quite telling - to remind myself what "avrdudess" was I googled it then tried to follow the link to http://blog.zakkemble.net/avrdud... and my corporate firewall blocked me saying "Outbound Spyware" - gulp!)

Indeed

Is that Windows 7 instance up to date?

If yes, how?

(Windows 7 can have selective updates or cumulative updates [like Windows 10])

Possible is an inconsistent Windows 7 that has odd behavior due to an incorrect sequence of updates.

Restore to wired USB the keyboard and mouse; re-try USBasp.

If successful then update the drivers for RF USB from the OEM (not from Microsoft), restore your preferred setup, and re-try USBasp.

Good point ... a shutdown of USB VBUS due to over-current might make wonky the PC's USB hub or the PC's power supply.

The Atmega 328 is not in the U3S it's on a separate programming board with a ZIF socket. I have now managed to get AVRDudess to read a programmed chip and write a new one, but I can't fathom out how to direct AVRDudess to read a file in a programmed chip to a specific file location. No luck with Extreme Burner, either on this PC or another one. Thanks for the tips. The attached are the instructions for the breakout board.

I would add a pair of 100nf caps to VCC/GND and AVCC/GND pairs, perhaps on the bottom of the board directly to the socket pins.

I would solder proper 100nF capacitors on the VCC, AVCC, pins

 

And remove the 47uF capacitor on the RESET pin.

Either leave it open or replace with 10nF or 100nF.

 

Life is much easier with avrdude command line.

Well perhaps, but I gave up trying to remember all that chicken scratch years ago, now a days I prefer to just click the burn button!

But I will say the command line is handy (after looking up all those switches for the umptheenth time) to build a simple script the production line can run when needed.

I will use a proven GUI e.g. Atmel Programmer in AS7.0

The Atmel Programmer in AS4 was not to be trusted.

 

I would never trust Extreme Burner.    Early versions were plain wrong.

I know nothing about Avrdudess.    Does it really work 100% ?

 

It seems wiser to use a command line when you want meaningful reports.

Luckily for us they put it all down in a user manual cheeky

 

(I'm a luddite though - while I do most of my work in Windows about 80% of it is at the Command Prompt and thank God for things like gnuwin32 so I have grep et al!)
