IT just installed Atmel Studio 7 from the Atmel website and we are having issues with creating a new project.  I create a new project and then I don't see any devices to choose from in the Device Selection window.  Does anybody know how to fix this?  We've gone through 3 installs but cannot seem to get the software to work correctly.

Thanks,

Gerardo

I failed to mention it in my original post but we are running Windows 7.

I'm not very familiar with Atmel Studio terminology but the link that you suggest appears to have to do with detecting the device (tool) that you are programming after your program is written.  For example the STK600 Development board?  The issue that I'm having is when creating a new project and even before writing any code.  I click on File->New->Project->GCC C++ Executable Project->Device Selection.  That is where I am stuck.  The Device Selection window does not populate any devices for me to select.

Recommended to use the web installer for Atmel Studio 7 such that updates can occur.

Hi,

Can you check the following

1) Make sure there are files under <STUDIOINSTALLDIR>\packs\atmel. If these files are present then chances are the cache is not created.

2) Start Atmel Studio

3) Go to Tools -> Device Pack Manager -> Advanced -> Reset cache

4) Restart Atmel Studio. If you are not able see the devices still in new project dialog then do the following workaround.

  •  Create a folder like D:\Studio\7.0
  •  Modify the file <STUDIOINSTALLDIR>\atpackmanager\atpack.properties
  •  Set CacheFolder=D:\Studio\7.0
  •  Restart Studio

Regards,

Charles

Update:

There is no Device Pack Manager under Tools in my install of Atmel Studio 7.  We downloaded it straight from the Atmel website too.  I'm wondering if the download or install is corrupted.  We did find the installation file for the Device Pack Manager and we installed it.  Still nothing shows up.  We then did the workaround and that worked to an extent.  The Device Selection window now populates devices and I am able to move forward.  I still don't see the Device Pack Manager under Tools but at least I can now actually program my device.

Any ideas on why the Device Pack Manager doesn't show up in Tools and how to fix that?  Otherwise, thanks for all of your help.

Go to Tools -> Select Profile and select Advanced and see whether that helps.

I had a similar issue and found that the issue would occur again a few days after applying the workaround above.

In addition to Board Selection being empty, I had the following additional symptoms with existing projects:

  • Errors like "[ERROR] Failed to initialize ASF distribution 'global name 'statvfs_result' is not defined'" when loading a project
  • ASF Wizard option is disabled
  • Breakpoints don't work (can be set before running, but then fail to set on the target)
  • Folder icons in Solution Explorer are corrupted or missing

I opened a support case with Microchip and was given this solution, which has lasted for over a week now on 2 separate PCs:

  • Open Atmel Studio
  • Go to Tools | Extensions and Updates
  • Uninstall Atmel Kits extension
  • Close Atmel Studio
  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  • cd <STUDIOINSTALLDIR>
  • StudioInstallAgent.exe /uninstall
  • StudioInstallAgent.exe /install
  • StudioInstallAgent.exe /installRestart Atmel Studio
