Hello,

when I'm scrolling in a .c or .h file, I am getting a stuttering experience. Sometimes it lags for almost 3 seconds. Things is strange, because all the other programs are running fine on my pc. Also a friend of mine is running the same project on worse hardware and it is going smooth.

Please help me, because it isn't a great experience to code like this.

My PC:

RAM: 16GB DDR3

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770HQ CPU @ 2.20GHz

GPU: Intel(R) Iris(TM) Pro Graphics 5200

SSD: 256GB (10,6GB free)

Greetings,

Fabio

The first thing I'd try is to open up the Task Manager and see if any other programs are hogging the CPU/Memory/Disk Usage

While using Atmel Studio I have around 15% CPU usage and around 24% RAM usage and my SSD usage is almost all the time at 0%.

Go to Tools/Options and try to go back to software rendering instead of hardware accelerated rendering (https://www.meadow.se/wordpress/visual-studio-slow-try-disabling-hardware-acceleration/)

It made the scrolling may be a bit better, but it is still nearly unusable. I also tried disabling VAssistX, but it didn't improve.

Any driver upgrades for your graphic card? Over-active antivirus?

I had an graphics card update, but it didn't solve the problem. I'm also getting these errors at the start of Atmel Studio:

Try deleting the unnecessary AS7 extension...maybe this could help...

THats not a lot of 'spare room' to have.  Even though you have 16Gb of RAM, and much of it may be free, 'Doze still uses the hard drive for virtual memory.

I have a nearly identical setup, with yours seemingly a little newer, that you have and I am not having the issues you are.  Only real difference is I have a 500GB SSD in mine.

I had an HP laptop that was as slow as molasses with AS7. Slow loading, slow scrolling, slow compiling. Everything was just slow, slow, slow. It was always the only explicit application running (well, plus TeamViewer). My current Dell is, in comparison, a dream. Everything is fast. Both were/are Win10. Glad I trashed the HP after it started throwing bus errors.

The problem with the storage capacity is, that I have two operating systems running and windows just gets 60GB. And then it’s not easy to get a lot of free space. The other strange thing is, that it compiles very fast in comparison to other PC‘s.

No not the ASF, the other extension which you dont need it. check the list of your installed extension and then you can decide.

How to improve studio performance for any supported version of Windows?

...

  • Visual Studio Shell requires a lot of swap space. Increase the paging file. Also, put the system to maximize performance. Both options are found in the System, Properties, Performance, Settings menu.

edit :

A hypervisor may process shared memory better than a VMM; shared memory being the RAM shared between GPU and CPU.

Push comes to shove - one graphics card per operating system instance (host, guest)

Might be able to configure either the hypervisor or the VMM to better share DRAM and VRAM (bulk memory and graphics card memory)

I‘m just running one operating at a time. I’m choosing it at boot.
