Dragon: Getting ISP frequency parameters.. FAILED!

My brand new, out of the box AVR Dragon is giving me a strange error.
I have installed the USB drivers it needs, and done a firmware upgrade of the Dragon from AVR Studio - all without a problem.
I can connect to it from AVR Studio 4 (Tools -> Program AVR -> Connect...). I select AVR Dragon over USB. The dragon flashes for a moment and then it's connected. This is just as it should be - I've been using a different Dragon elsewhere, without problems.
When I try to select the "board" tab it displays the following status information:

Getting revisions...      OK!
Reading target voltage ..      OK!
Getting ISP frequency parameters.. FAILED!

If I try reading or writing the ISP frequency it gives me the same error.

I don't have anything connected to the Dragon - not a single wire. Shouldn't it work anyway? I have seen it work before (with another dragon).

AVR Studio 4.13 build 528 on Win XP, Core 2 Duo machine.
Board tab reports Revision Hw: 0x0102, Sw: 0x0101 0x0109
I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything I can think of at least twice - no difference.

Any ideas on why it doesn't work?

where the hell should it read the ISP freq then? from air?!? Jeesas... you must have a ship connected to do anything with the dragon. and the chip must be powered up.

bloody-orc: Erm... no? Isn't the ISP frequency programmed on the Dragon itself?
Also... what manual? All I can find is the AVR Tools Help, and that isn't very helpful when it comes to troubleshooting...

Also, of course the Dragon is connected to the USB - I thought that was a given! But nothing else - IE: no processor.

well... maybe. Didn't know that actually. sry...
but what happens when you connect an AVR to the board?

Are you connecting to a prototype board from the 6 pin ISP connector on the dragon?

You are going to need a target hooked up and powered to be able to read the ISP freq of the Dragon ( just tried with no target and get what you are seeing- hoooked up a target and can read the ISP freq.)

This was odd to me. As I recall we managed to do this in a related project with another Dragon, but hooking up the MCU seemed to fix this.

Thank you all for your help! Where is this documented, anyway?
