Hi there !

I updated from v7.790 to 1006 and opened up a project created with the former Studio version.

When I hit F10 to start a debug session, there's a popup saying "Backend agent is not running (no tools available)".

How can I fix this?

Thank you,

Chris

Environment: Windows 10 x64

Atmel ICE

UC3 A3 Xplained

ps. This is the output from the "Backend Agent" window:

11:41:44: [INFO] Starting local Backend Agent atbackend.exe 127.0.0.1:0
11:41:44: [INFO] Process: C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Studio\7.0\atbackend\atbackend.exe /connection-port=2141

11:41:44: [WARNING] The back end process exited with code 0
Some bundles failed to load. Terminating.

This topic has a solution.

Solution below:

This thread talks about AS v7.1006 installation failing, and the resolution is to scan for registry leftovers from previous AS versions:

https://www.avrfreaks.net/comment...

The command

wmic product where "vendor like 'Atmel%'" get Name, Version

found several entries, among them "Atmel Studio IDE 7.0 v7.790".

I tried to delete/repair that entry using Microsoft Fix It, but a new scan brought it up again.

After some manual regedit fiddling, the entry was gone and I could successfully install AS 7.1006.

Then, I loaded one of my previous projects only to get a message like "Unsupported device UC3A3256", so

I checked the Device pack Manager (unter the Tools menu). Uninstalled the DFP for the UC3A's, re-installed it

and now it works. Ugh.

<rant>

Now, the more experienced folks might know where to look, but this can be a real showstopper if work needs to be done.

I'd rather expect an installation to allow for all possibilities, and make it a smooth process for the end user.

Atmel, you have some work ahead of you.

</rant>

best,

Chris

hi, please help.  have studio7.0.1931 installed, w7 x64 pro.  when clicking start debug w/o breaking says backend agent not running no tools.

biggest problem is studio says no tools, not even simulator.  how do you turn on simulator as a tool?

have enable diagnostic logging true & display threshold INFO.

"Unable to get the TargetService" is in log file.

tried everything above.  my wmic won't give results, unlike ours.

thanks in advance.

Run atmelstudio.exe /log this will generate logs. Share the logs http://microchip.force.com/micro...

Are you the administrator of the machine wmic might take time to run based on system configuration, Did you wait for the command to complete or you aborted in the middle?

Charles

Check if Windows Management Instrumentation service is started.

1)    Click Start and type: services.msc in the Search box.

2)    Open Services panel and find Windows Management Instrumentation.

3)    Double click on WMI, stop and re-start it. Make sure the Startup type is Automatic.

If it still fails check https://blogs.technet.microsoft....

Charles
