I just downloaded the full installer (as-installer-7.0.1931-full.exe) from the website.  There were no issues with the install process.

When I run Atmel Studio 7.0, the application crashes and a dialog appears that says, "Atmel Studio 7 has stopped working - A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I am running Windows 10 Pro.

Any words of advise?

Thanks in advance!

  • Atmel Studio invokes MSBuild which is dependent on .NET
  • July'18 .NET fiasco

Has .NET been corrected for your version of Windows 10?  (I don't have the answer to that question)

I don't believe that I have the July'18 .NET patch installed.  Looking at my Update History, the last set of patches was installed on 4/11/2018.

All my other Microsoft apps work fine (Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Skype for Business, Outlook, etc).  Only Atmel Studio is crashing.

If I run AtmelStudio.exe from the command line, I get a stack trace (attached).  The first line states:

Unhandled Exception: System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.

Do you use ASF? If not then uninstall it (the crash originates from the ASF plugin)

(yes, I work for Atmel, yes, I do this in my spare time, now stop sending PMs)

I am not able to update to Windows 10 Enterprise.

I did try 7.0.1188 and it had the same issue.  After uninstalling 1188, I removed all files/folders under C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel, and rebooted.  Next I installed 7.0.1645 without ASF and it comes up and functions fine.  Next, I installed 7.0.1931 over 7.0.1645 but with ASF included this time.  The first time I launched, it crashed as before.  The next few times I launched, it worked fine.  Next I updated the ASF from 3.40.0.1184 to 3.43.0.1308 and now things aren't working again.

I also tried installing 7.0.1931 with ASF on another laptop.  It crashes too.

1) If you have random folders under C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Studio\7.0\Extensions Delete the folders and start Atmel Studio.

2) Delete the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Studio\7.0\Extensions\atmel\as-asf-vsix

3) Restart Atmel Studio

4) Install ASF from Tools -> Extensions and updates.

Charles

What's a "random folder"?  What should be there?

When a extension is installed it will be installed under  C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Studio\7.0\Extensions with a random folder name.
