I just downloaded the " AVR 8-bit Toolchain v3.62 – Windows " and am wondering if this thingie needs to be installed anyhow, since it contains just the usual directories, but no setup/installation script. And no, i do not want to install Atmel Studio. What about the missing make utility I have read upon, is this still true with this latest official toolchain?

Thanks a bunch,

You just set a PATH to the avr\bin directory that contains avr-gcc.exe and the tools find everything else relative to there.

Thanks, Cliff! No registry mods or anything else? Just the files themselves in the correct dir struct, and the PATH setting? Great!

Yup, just that. In fact you can have multiple versions. Just having it find the right avr-gcc.exe makes it find everything else. In fact you can even run it as \path\to\some\version\avr\bin\avr-gcc.exe even if it's not in the PATH but, of course, you will want to run avr-objcopy and avr-objdump and the other tools too so a PATH make this easier.
