Atmel Studio 7 doesn't start with no error message

Hello

 

I have two new computers: one new laptop Acer Swift 314-52 and desktop HP H5SUOKO, both with Windows 10 Home. I've installed Atmel Studio 7.0.1931 and on HP everything works fine, but on Acer I can't run AS. When I try to open AS, I just hear Windows alert sound and nothing happens, no any message, even splash screen doesn't appear. I tried to uninstall it and install again. Installation went fine, no any errors were shown, but AS still can't launch. Then I tried to uninstall it with Revo Uninstaller as someone mentioned on this forum, and then install again, but no success. What's wrong? Is there any log where AS saves error messages during startup?

I believe it may write a log file as it starts )or tries to start) up so you may want to look for that and see if it contains anything useful to determine why the startup fails.

 

As you've mentioned Windows 10 note that I've seen some posts here in recent days that says that the most recent Win10 update from M$ may have buggered up AS7 operation - so you may want to consider rolling back if that update has been applied.

OK, but where's the log?

 

This is a new computer. It has Windows 10 Home version 1803, whereas HP computer (where AS7 works) has Windows 10 Home version 1709.

That's for you to find out - clearly it's going to be somewhere within the install directories (so I guess under \Program Files(x86)\Atmel\... perhaps?). You can either search this site for previous threads where Morten from Atmel has mentioned these logs or you can just "dir *.log /s" for it at the top of that installation location.

 

EDIT and, yes, it's apparently 1803 that may have seriously screwed things (nice to know M$ are reliable in their ability to SNAFU everything they touch!)

It's possible that the previous Windows 10 version 1803 build is functional wrt Atmel Studio; try a rollback (one has 10 days after a new build to rollback)

Windows updates are corrected usually within a week or few of a release; so, wait "a while" before installing any Windows update (the exception is a Microsoft security advisory; infamously, an advisory a few months before WannaCry)

Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) is a work-in-progress; avoid it, wait for Semi-Annual Channel.

The problem with that method is it eats into the 18 month lifetime of a Windows 10 version (24 months for Enterprise and Education, 30 months for Windows 10 by subscription)

I couldn't downgrade Windows 1803 to 1709 on new laptop, because it's factory installed. So I've made an experiment and upgraded Windows from 1709 to 1803 on desktop computer and guess what happend to Atmel Studio - nothing! Still works! So version of Windows makes no difference, but we have still no clue how to solve this problem. 

 

I haven't found any logs, unfortunately.

Start with the switch atmelstudio.exe /log and attach the logs mentioned in the below article.

Hello

 

Same case as in Atmel Studion. I only hear windows alert sound and nothing happens. In the log there's same error as in Atmel Studio's log.

Please try the following 

 

1)  Delete  %appdata%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0

 

2) Delete %localappdata%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0

 

3) Delete %appdata%\Atmel\AtmelStudio\7.0\

4) Delete %localappdata%\Atmel\AtmelStudio\7.0

5) Uninstall Atmel Studio 7.0

6) Clean up Visual Studio using https://github.com/Microsoft/VisualStudioUninstaller/releases/tag/v1.4

7) Install Microsoft Visual Studio Isolated Shell 2015 installer (https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/atmel-studio/visual-studio-isolated-shell-14.0.23107.10.exe) 

 

8)  Run TestApplication.exe /log 

 

Let us know how it went and attach the ActivityLog.xml.

1)  Delete  %appdata%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0

I don't have 14.0. There's 10.0 and 15.0_82888480. I've deleted both of them.

 

2) Delete %localappdata%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0

Again, no 14.0. There were:

- 10.0

- 15.0

- 15.0_82888480

- Packages

- SettingsLogs

- vshub

all of them trashed

 

3) Delete %appdata%\Atmel\AtmelStudio\7.0\

ok

 

4) Delete %localappdata%\Atmel\AtmelStudio\7.0

ok

 

5) Uninstall Atmel Studio 7.0

ok

 

6) Clean up Visual Studio using https://github.com/Microsoft/Vis...

no problems

 

7) Install Microsoft Visual Studio Isolated Shell 2015 installer (https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.c...) 

This app told me that Visual Studio is already installed, so I uninstalled it and installed again with this installer.

 

8) TestApplication works. It starts and opens empty Visual Studio window. Then I installed Atmel Studio 7.0.1931 and is works :D :D :D

alguim que me ayude estoy con windows 8.1 ya llevo dos dias sin dormir quriendo solucionada el problema del  " visual studio 2015 shell (isolated)  no e podido no puedo usar el software  de atmel estudio 7 por culpa de este bendito error ............... alguien me  puede a que se debe el error  y como podria solucionarlo sin antes volverme loco ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

If you are having an issue with Visual Studio Isolated Shell 2015, please follow the steps

 

1) Clean up Visual Studio using https://github.com/Microsoft/VisualStudioUninstaller/releases/tag/v1.4

3) Install Microsoft Visual Studio Isolated Shell 2015 installer (https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/atmel-studio/visual-studio-isolated-shell-14.0.23107.10.exe)

hey guys. i experienced the same issue yesterday. the night before that, i was able to run atmel studio 7 on my windows 7 without any problem. everything was working fine. i didn't touch any thing, and didn't change/install any update (automatic update is disabled for windows, so no unnoticed update) ,setting, tools , software , etc. but yesterday in my first attempt to continue simulating the same code (with a little edition), atmel throw errors saying there is no tool for simulation. also in other situations i got errors like backend agent is not running or project wizard not running when. to me it seemed similar to what other people already described here and there. so i tried many different ways including this  (right here) with no success. went to microchip website and found out about the new version of the software called microchip studio (apparently mostly the same atmel stuido according to what i understood from here) and decided to give it a try.

so i installed microchip studio (web_installer) which i hope it doesn't turn out to be a bad decision haunting me for weeks to come. after completing the installation which was dissapointing because of all those recurring 2015 shell errors (Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Shell (Isolated) Cannot find one or …) tried some simple tests without any immediate problem. i created both c and c++ project without any problem (this would give me error of project wizard not running in atmel studio 7). tested the debugger, no problem. tested device programming and it worked just fine. so i tried to exit the program and there it gave me this error: CefSharp.Core.dll missing. with a little search and again thanks to avrfreaks (here) i found out it has something to do with my Microsoft Visual c++ Redistributables (and maybe it was the main issue in the first place). so i uninstalled every single one of them (2008,2010,2013,2015), downloaded them from here and installed them manually (because i don't know much about them and reinstalling just 2015 Redistributable  didn't seem to resolve the problem, although i think i should have). now everything seems to be working. i tried running, debugging, some simple programs and was able to close micro chip studio. so i think i kind of solved my problem. maybe this information can help others with the same problem.

Those are two faces of the same coin. The backend agent has to be running for the simulator to work so it does seem like the backend is not starting for some reason.

 

If you are running AS7 then press Ctrl-Shift-Esc (or start "Task Manager" in some other way) then when AS7 is running "normally" you should see:

 

 

If "Atmel Backed Component" is not shown there then that is the heart of your problem.

A web-enabled Microchip Studio will connect to a web server for updates; an offline install will not.

Lack of Windows 7 ESU isn't an issue though web enabled is an issue.

Some "old" PC can be completely updated to Windows 10; otherwise, will lose a driver that may or may not be an issue.

An activated Windows 7 can be updated to Windows 10 at zero price.

PC's OEM may list what drivers made the transition to Windows 10 and which version of Windows 10; copy from the OEM the UEFI and drivers before installing Windows 10.

If the PC can't reach to Windows 10, Windows 8.1 is an alternative for a while.

thanks everyone for replies and support. as i said i think i kind of solved my problem (there is no signs of problem for now) but i'm sure i can learn much more from you about these kind of stuff in case something similar happens again.

oh ... and sorry for any language mistakes as english is not my first language

thanks clawson. when i encountered the problem for the first time, i searched and found out about the backend problem ((atbackend.exe in my case) and did the same check from task manager (though i don't really remember the result as i tried many many solutions after that but i remember i executed atbackend.exe and atw.exe from installation directory without any errors). however, it's good to know that it was probably the main problem. now i'm happy to see it in my task manager (and suppose my problem finally has resolved)

 i suspected that maybe there's something wrong with my offline installer and hoped the web installer automatically check out my system and tell me what my problem is and install whatever is needed.

unfortunately my laptop is one of the very oldest ones i guess. i don't think a lenovo G550 cand handle windows 10 as my friend with newer model and better specs (windows 10 default) told me she had to downgrade to windows 7! she also tried windows 8 before and wasn't satisfied.

thanks for the help but i don't think it's the same problem. i read all posts and discussion from the links you referred and i'm sure the error messages i've got, the strange behavior of the studio and the way i finally handled it, is not similar.

Apparently can though with some effort.

Lenovo G550 upgraded from Win7 to Win 10 and it is almost unusable it - Microsoft Community

thanks. i'll check it out. maybe one day i will be able to use some of the features of W10 too and hopefully put an end to the my laptop's endless software/hardware malfunction  :)
