I guess that's really just intended as an OTP (One-Time Programmable) configuration - at manufacture ?
So, in that case, it would be a waste to have "high" endurance EEPROM.
It used to be pretty common to throw away parts which were used during development and not sell them to customers.
I do not know much about the EEprom (flash) stucture, but from what I understood a high voltage is used to pull some electrons through an isolation barrier, and because that layer is an insulator and not a conductor it leaves some "holes" in the wake of the electrons.
And then you have an ini mini tiny capacitor which is supposed to hold it's charge for 20 years or more.
To me it is completely flabbergasting that this works at all.
And from a single line of text you can not deduce what is behind it.
It may wel be that because of the nature of the product they just don't bother to test long term / high temperature data retention.
