AVRISP: Locked up when switching device osc source

My original target fuse setting:

Ext. Crystal/Resonator High Freq.; Start-up time: 16K CK+64ms (CKSEL=1111 SUT=111)

I then switch to:

Ext. RC Osc

instead of,

Int. RC Osc

as I'd intended.

Now I get the "Check the ISP Freq" error. :( How do I recover this device? I seem to be completely unable to do anything further. :(

The chip is expecting an external clock, so you must provide it with one. Or if you have a way to program the chip in parallel mode, then you can do that as well.

Given it's fine pitch SMT it's not getting anything other than what it has and I've no way to parallel program. :(

Can I jam in a square wave from a signal generator? Of course the board's not worth fixing so I guess I can do no further harm, but in case this happens in production it would be nice to know how to recover them. :)
