For anyone interested:

I work for the University of Wisconsin & this July 15-18th we will be teaching a shourt course featuring the AVR line of MCUs. The course it titled: "Introduction to Embedded Microcontrollers"

Atmel you hear that? May be you should charge a small fee, that includes the STK500, and have bigger and better seminars.

Yes that is alot of money - However a few things to consider.

This short course give you 2.7 continuing education credits from an accredited university.

This is not just an AVR course. It is much broader including fundamentals & application how-to's and happens to use the AVR line.

Its intended for engineers, technicians, and consultants who want a fundamental understanding of microcontrollers and how they can be added to their next product or process design. Persons attending do not need extensive experience in electrical engineering or digital electronics to attend this course.

Some topics covered include:
· A brief review of DC circuit fundamentals as applied to microcontrollers
· Proper grounding techniques for noise immunity
· Basics of solid-state devices, including diodes, LEDs and transistors
· Digital circuit fundamentals and binary numbers
· An overview of the C programming language
· Microcontroller architecture
· Stepping motors and positioning software
· Driving common DC loads
· Optical isolation for noise immunity
· Creating a Web-accessible microcontroller product

Atmel will cover the Atmel Processors (that is what theyre trying to sell)... and not pay the attention to then various application how-to's that we are intending. We aren't selling parts we are providing an educational experience that covers much more than just Atmel AVR parts. And compared to other engineering professional development short courses I've seen at various universities here in the U.S.the price is not out of line.

One last point. If Atmel does this type of seminar it will very likely get reflected in term of parts costs (just the way AVRStudio's development costs covered - they have to pay for services somehow). In that case every AVR parts buyer gets to pay for individuals attending a course instead of those who need the course paying for it themselves.

Some of the materials are already on the Labs website as they were developed for a new course we taught the fist time last fall semester & will be teaching again this fall (in addition to the short course in july). The equipment has ~ 1 year and 3 different courses that used it under its belt so the software/hardware quirks have been ironed out. For example I have some source code & schematics published on the website for most of the hardware that will be used.

However note that the hardware very general purpose (somewhat complicated) as we have capabilities for motion control (4ch - DAC/ 3 ch- ENCODER), keypad, lcd, general dio, RS232, RS485, CAN, & embedded internet, etc... with most capabilities supported simultaneously (except for serial & internet) with several different AVR parts. So alot of what we will cover is how to develop/implement these capabilities, and why / how to make the design tradeoffs to achieve the desired functionality in addition to the fundamentals that wil be presented.

Thanks for the additional info. Sounds like a really nice course you have laid out. I especially like the why/how for design as opposed to "just remember these formulae". Teaching how to derive reasons is much better than just memorizing.

I personally don't have the time to be able to take such a course, but I am very interested in learning more, hence my question about course materials (handouts, books, papers, notes etc).

Plus, I'm kind of a ways from Wisconsin ...

Hmmm, perhaps you could consider building a DVD type version of the course. That is, video of the lectures and lab work, with notes and datasheets on the disc. Everything but the actual lab and equipment.

I'd buy it :)
