I have not yet been able to read the full article as yet, but sounds really intriguing.
Guess you could make a photovoltaic diode using the same ptype and ntype fluids? Paint em on in layers?

Stanford Ovshinsky invented amorphous semiconductors in the 60's. You'll find them in lcd panels - so called 'active matrix'. He also did solar cells and various battery technologies.
The transistors aren't as good as silicon ones though.
