The only thing missing in the basic kit, which is $40 cheaper, are a couple of adapters? If I get the basic kit, will I open it and say 'Crap where is the AVR 10 pin jtag cable'?

Yes, the only things that not included are adapter board (mostly useless) and a squid cable. Not a big loss, but annoying to not have a standard 10-pin AVR connector.

It comes with super short 10-pin 0.05" cable, which is next to useless. It is absurdly short. And those cables cost an arm and a leg.

I use adapter boards from JTAGICE3 and they are very nice. I don't know why they were replaced.
