Interesting. Especially the pricing--quite a drop from A. (AVR8 prices jumped maybe 30% in the past few months. Perhaps with the lower-cost B line coming out, it makes sense...)

Putting aside the pricing, what do we learn from the product announcement? Low power; unique ID; improved USART.

What are the errata?

12.3.1 Rev. A
– Wrong device ID when using debugWire
– Power consumption in power save modes
– USART start-up functionality not working

Parts in stock, and no full datasheet posted?!?

Newark is showing no stock, and pricing of 127c for qty 1000+.

The 168PA-MMH is on special for 154c at qty 1.

What I can't figure out is whether it has an internal 32khz RTC, or is it just the old async timer support with a 32khz external crystal?

The 168PA-MMH is on special for 154c at qty 1.

Well, it is still really early for the supply chain to settle out on "real" pricing. But didja notice that DigiKey is "1,000 0.97179" and the listed reel-of-2000 price is .66 ?

Sometimes one will hear from the manager "It's good enough".

CR cell leakage is very low; a bit more may not matter other than for the smaller CR.

As the process geometry reduces the leakage increases; keep those old fabs primed and alive.

I'm guessing a process shrink with some improvements (ref, clock) and such.

I can't speak to the better ref, but as for a better clock with process shrink I'm skeptical. The last process change to the 'A' resulted in worse clock performance. Older AVR models have a much more stable internal clock (less jitter). I recall reading material from Atmel which explained the change to the 'A' came with greatly reduced silicon real estate for the oscillator. This reduced power consumption, but increased clock jitter. Of course I can't find and threads which support this (search rage!).

Something other than process shrink must be behind the improved clock. However I note that the 'improved clock' makes no mention of jitter, only of finer calibration capability.

It is hard to do much "exploration" without the full datasheet.

The mention of "8-channel 10-bit ADC with Temperature Measurement" along with only two listed packages implies "DIP is dead"?

Didn't notice that. The TQFP is usually more expensive than the QFN, not the other way around. While it would be nice to see them selling for 66c in a full reel, I suspect when the product info and pricing is all settled, the real (no pun intended) price will be closer to $1.

Revision B of the ATmega48PB/88PB/168PB Preliminary Summary and Complete data sheets are posted at Atmel AVR 8- and 32-bit Microcontrollers What's Changed.

Edit: It's interesting that the Summary errata sections of both A and B revisions are identical with the '88PB and '168PB Errata pages being pre-loaded with revisions B and C updates.

Now we have something to dig into.

From the first page summary:

-- No DIP package

-- Rated to 105 C

-- Power consumption numbers as noted earlier

Typical Characteristics, Active Supply Current chart: 1MHz, 5V: PA ~0.8mA; PB ~0.62mA <<less for PB

1.8V looks very close between the two charts at about 0.2--certainly not the 0.35 of the first page.

20MHz 5V is 9+mA for PA and 12+mA for PB -- indeed about 30% more? Taking another point, 3.6V/10MHz is also 3mA for PA and 4mA for PB -- consistent.

"Sleep Modes" chart has added the USART (start-frame detection) column, and indicates it is applicable to all sleep modes. However, the text says "The USART start frame detector can wake up the MCU from Power-down, Standby or ADC Noise Reduction sleep mode when it detects a start bit."

"VINT Internal Voltage Reference 1.0 1.1 1.2 V"
Same for both?!? Not according to press release...

"Table 30-3. Calibration Accuracy of Internal RC Oscillator"
appears identical in both. Not according to press release?

[If I busted my butt to add an improved feature to this PB initiative, I'd make darned sure that the datasheet reflected my work.]

Watchdog oscillator changed--differently-shaped curve vs. temperature.

Internal oscillator charts indeed show a much flatter temperature response. And OSCCAL has a much smaller discontinuity jump, and much more linear frequency w.r.t. OSCCAL value.

A-HA! I thought I saw something about more I/O pins. As on the Tiny48 family, four more (more-or-less) GP I/O are gained:

PE2/PE3 (ADC6/ADC7)

PE0/PE1 taking over a pair of VCC/GND; one has ACO

(no pin-change)

Comparing the Register Summary, I see the following differences:

-- Port E

-- ACO bit (ACOE bit in new ACSR0)

-- Device ID, in high I/O space (direct access!) [but in the text the registers are called DIDR0, DIDR1, ... which is a conflict]

-- ADC6D and ADC7D added to DIDR0

Octopart hasn't caught up to that yet. DigiKey has both -AU and -MU.

We got a few -AU from DigiKey last month. Put them into a '48 app. Re-built, and it worked fine. Called it a '168PA for build and skipped the signature check during ISP, and worked fine.

Since then, CodeVision has released a version with full build and ISP support, which also works fine.

Does that mean we only get half the features? Or no-one read half the words in the PA datasheet anyway, so they were removed?
