stdio with usb on a samd21

Once upon a time in the xmega world, I could easily hook up my usb, use stdio and easily print messages to the console.

 

This might still be the case with the samd21, but someone did a masterful job of hiding or obscuring the information in the bowels of asf.

 

Does anyone know of a document/example for the samd21 that is a simple, out of the box example working for the samd21 Explained pro board.   I seem to have stumbled upon dozens of close or non-working examples, but just cant find the magic combination.

 

I think I like the device, I know I hate the documentation.  Seems so hard to find the simplest things.   This is certainly not due to the lack of volume, just lack of content.   Maybe I'm just getting old and stupid.

I seem to remember that to use printf() in an ARM you may need to provide an implementation of the function _sbrk(). If you Google/search that you will probably find other threads discussing the use of printf() in SAMD.
