So, despite going to all the trouble of changing the name from "AVR Software Framework" to "Atmel Software Framework" - for use on non-AVR products - the licence still forbids use on anything other than an AVR!!

I did not think ASF would work on anything but an Atmel device to begin with so what's the big issue?

It has been noted a few years back. And ever since it has been slowly moving to Atmel microcontroller product or something like that.

For example Lightweight Mesh license reads:

As larryvc  correctly noted, not all Atmel devices are AVRs - are they?

Specifically, there are now ARMs!

 

That was my point: Atmel went to the trouble of renaming "AVR Software Framework" and "AVR Studio" to not preclude ARM!

So you can't use the software with an Atmel radio and a non-Atmel microcontroller.

This is a tricky question and there are two points of view. Some people think that anything that is not a microcontroller, is still a "microcontroller product", since they are not a business on its own, but a value added devices, that help driving MCU sales. And some people think that yes, you can't use this software with non-Atmel MCU. Which plays into the same theory, the main product is MCU and the rest of it is just an infrastructure around it.

 

I really have no idea which is right. I think that a sale is a sale, be it MCU or a radio. But then again, I know nothing about business side of the deal.
