I was just wondering
has somebody replaced 89C51 in existing board with AVR 8515 ?
They seem to have very close pin assignments in the 40 pdip version.
Was it intention by Atmel to make them pin-compatible?

We originally designed a MCS51 board incl 89C51 which could also allow the AVR 8515 to plug-in, the main difference is RESET polarity, but you have to watch out for other things such as zero data hold when writing out to external memory for the AVR, we still have some of these PCB board left, go to our web site www.flash.co.uk and order the the PCB via our on-line catalog in Special Offer section.
Noticing the pinout I asked Atmel this question in 1997.
The answer was no...but they wanted to use the existing factory test gear to save on capital expenditure - the rest is a byproduct.
We have had PCB's designed to cater for both since the 8515 was first released.
