WinAVR (newest distribution) does strange things in the progam. i assign a pointer to a function, call it from an interrupt and its good. then i assign it to another function and and call that (dontcare if it's from an interrupt or main())and the processor resets its self. if I call the function i assign later earlier, it's good. i'll send the source code soon. how can this be?

There are pointy haired bald people.
Time flies when you have a bad prescaler selected.

When you say resets itself Does the micro do a full reset as if the watchdog has operated or the power has failed/recovered or does the programe just seem to start up again.

Can you look at the flags to find the nature of the reset, if that is what it is.
Has this code worked with another version of the compiler?

Keep it simple it will not bite as hard
