Trying new toys tonight: My new win 8.1 computer, Studio 6.2 and now my Atmel ICE.

Studio doesn't find it, though it's plugged in and the RED led is on.

Must be time for another reboot?

New toys. One by necessity. Not a lot of time to play with them.

The clipboard is still giving me grief. Sometimes it works.

After rebooting, my Atmel ICE seems to play nicely. I programmed chips and even used the debugger with it. Pretty fun. I've never had a hardware debugger before, always simulated.

This is probably (hopefully) an issue that we have solved now. Problem with new driver install and our HID based debuggers, causing the device to be checked before the driver is fully installed and registered, and therefore not recognized by studio.

Is there a known work-around for this bug?  I'm having it (no tools listed, command line tool not seeing anything attached), and not finding any resolution.  I've reinstalled drivers multiple times - no difference.  I've plug in the tool before and after starting Studio - no difference.  Windows device manager sees both Dragon and MK-II as installed and operational.  Was all working great under win7-64bit.  Upgraded to Win8.1-64bit and all stopped.

Downgrading back to Win7 is not an options.  Thus, I'm dead in the water.  Don't care if work-around is complex - just need to program my boards...  :-(

For a long time, I've thought the trick was to plug in the ICE thing before starting studio, but today I even had the programming window open when I plugged in the ICE and it worked fine. My ICE usually fails the first thing I try when I first connect it, but works normally after that, so I just got into the habit of reading the signature first.

As far as the clipboard problem goes, I switched from firefox to chrome for the browser, and the clipboard works fine.

I used to have a similar problem now and then on my Win XP machine. Re-installing the Jungo drivers usually fixed it. Maybe that'll work with Win 8. OOPs, I see you've already tried that. On my win 8 machine I sometimes see that no tool is listed even though the MKII is connected. Clicking the grayed out box will bring up "JTAG" and its serial number (FFFFFFFF, for some reason). But it works.

I switched to Chrome from Firefox and the clipboard problem went away.

My Atmel-ICE now works reliably, though it always fails when I first start it up, works from then on. Not sure if this happens only with PDI.

Only headache now is that a program with too many __memex parameters in functions gives a strange error when you try to build it for debug, so you can't use the debugger unless you want to step through disassembly.

Not sure if this happens only with PDI.

Only first time on PDI.

This issue should be fixed in a fw upgrade for the Atmel-ICE that I think was done for 6.2.... I can double check that tomorrow...

Could you read out the versions from the Atmel-ICE (either in the Programming Dialog in the Tool page, or by opening a Atmel Studio command line and type 'atfw -t atmelice -r')?

That's a compiler issue....

The fix was made for fw version 1.15, but the one in 6.2 is 1.13. So this will be fixed in the next release of studio...

Well....

First, I found it worked best if I connected the atme lice before starting studio. Now it doesn't much seem to matter. If you're using PDI, like for xMega chips, once studio does recognize it, the first operation will fail, but it will work from then on, until we get Morten's update.

When you first plug in the usb cable, your computer makes the USB chime?

(Oh yes, studio sometimes takes minutes to start if you plug in the ice before starting studio.)

You don't see it listed in the drop list here?

Perhaps your's is broken and the usb connector inside the plastic case has come loose?

currently i'm using ATMEL STUDIO 6.2 on WINDOWS 8.1 platform and studio can not detect ATMEL ICE even though i plug-in it properly. LEDs on ICE main board shows that board power up properly. i think problem might be related to USB driver.

Hmm. Your jungo driver looks different than mine. I'd say to try uninstalling it and install it again, but then you'd ask me how to install it again

As i already lost my apps and software as windows 8.1 offered REFRESH option but it wasn't, it just liked virtual format option. Beware of such things.

I'll just reiterate the user guide; there is no driver requirement for the Atmel-ICE. It uses HID to do the debug communication.

As far  as I know, there are some USB stack issues in vbox which are fixed in the vboxpack thingy... Can't remember what it was, but it is usually needed to get stable connections. Also, vbox struggles sometimes with multiple endpoints (the Atmel-ICE has 3 or 4, depending on how it is counted...).

The only thing the driver does is renaming it from a HID composite device to Atmel CMSIS debugger or whatever it is called today :)

in my case problem arise due to Atmel studio 6.2. when i install studio on my system first time, some drivers were not properly install at the time of installation. because of same reason my Atmel ICE could not detect and device manager in my system could not find driver for it, as drivers for same was not install properly. after that i "REFRESH"(option available in windows 8.1) my system and again install atmel studio 6.2. after that studio can detect atmel ICE properly and it detect as HID(Human Interface Device) like mouse, keyboard.

but studio 6.2 pose many problem while installation, my suggestion is that studio should be install properly.

Remember on thing is that Studio 6.1 does not support Atmel ICE device.

Hi all,

My Atmel-ICE PCBA doesn't work with Atmel Studio 6.2.1153 on win8.1 x64 I can see debugger driver in device manager as Atmel/Atmel-ICE Data Gateway and in HID session two items(HID-compliant vendor-defined device, USB input device)(see figure below). Device work properly(information from win).   But selected debugger/programmer list in Atmel Studio is empty. I was try request atfw -l in command prompt, i got response: Connected tools: atmelice J41800000xxx Could you help me find some solution? I was tried reinstall Atmel Studio and USB driver without success.

Hi,

Now day i find solution previous described problem with unsupported debugger ATMEL-ICE tool in Atmel Studio 6.2.1153 tool list on win8.1 x64 . I don't know where is namely problem, but if i uninstall sam-ba software from PC, my debugger is immediately after restart recognized by Atmel Studio and listed in AS debugger tool list. When i install sam-ba software again, the debugger tool list in AS is again empty. It means Atmel Studio and Atmel sam-ba software drivers are in conflict.

I'm guessing you are seeing this issue... Short story, in the samba folder, rename or remove the jlinkarm.dll. This will cause samba to loose the possibility to talk to a SEGGER tool, but it will fix Atmel Studio.

i solved this.

sorry for my skill for english.

test os : win8.0 x64 pro
test tool : atmel-ice 1.04
test SW : Atmel Studio 6.2.1548

first, uninstall atmel USB Driver

copy firmware zip file in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.2\tools\Atmel-ICE" to atfw folder("C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.2\atbackend")
copy wdapi1010.dll file in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\AtmelUSBInstaller\JungoDriver\usb64" to atfw folder

Firmware update,

WIN+'R' ->
type "cmd" ->
type "cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.2\atbackend" ->
type "atfw -a atmelice_fw.zip -t atmelice"

firmware 1.04 -> 1.16

should be download AtmelUSBInstaller form "https://gallery.atmel.com/Produc..."

file name is AtmelUSBInstaller-6.2.342
install atmel USB Driver, then The two devices appear in Device Manager
Atmel AND jungo, two devices should be installed automatically.

run and check "atmel studio 6.2 -> tools -> device programing"

@Nosukani, Atmel Studio 6.2 sp2 is available now.  It installs a much more recent set of USB drivers.  You should upgrade if you haven't already.

Thank you for your reply.

When I was using Windows 7 did not know the problem.

Yesterday I received an atmel studio 6.2 sp2 version from atmel website.
USB drivers are installed, but only one device has been added.
JUNGO driver is not automatically added.

So clear the USB driver, got new drivers from atmel website.
Since then, two devices has been installed with no problems. (ATMEL AND JUNGO)

Hope of help I do not know, maybe if the same symptoms, I hope this helps.
