How long should I wait after powering up the analog comparator
on the at90s1200, before polling its value at the output?
My application only needs to read the comparator once
every ten seconds, and I was thinking might as well
power off the comparator between reads. The chip is clocked
at 4MHz, just wondering how many (if any) cycles I should wait
after powering up before reading ACO.

main program
...
..
power up analog comp.
(wait ?)
read ACO
power off analog comp.
...
...
..
loop to main

Page 2-49 of the data book gives the propagation delay of the Analog Comparator for a couple of different Vcc values (oddly, neither of which is 5V). The worst of the two is 750 ns. Given your crystal frequency, I would in one fashion or another eat 3 cycles after switching it on.
