Isn't AS 6.2 insanely large?

Installing/reinstalling AS on some computers I chose to make sure I get the latest 6.2 SP1; after starting the environment I noted how long that took loading, but at first I just thought it related to a "first start syndrome".

Now, every time I start it, appears to be unreasonably slow (from a user's perspective). Checking its memory footprint, I see it takes around 570 MB (plus 21 MB for atbackend.exe) with no project loaded - sheesh!

frownDid anybody else find it to be a bit overweight as I do?

Don't have at hand a VS 2012/2013 instance to compare (maybe they are comparable?), but a humble VS 2010 runs at 135 MB, in a very shorter time.

AS6 is VS2010 so you'd expect performance to be similar though it's true that Atmel bring a lot of baggage and it seems they load/precache a lot of it during startup.

and have you compared this to Eclipse... ?

Top Tips:

  1. How to properly post source code - see: https://www.avrfreaks.net/comment... - also how to properly include images/pictures
  2. "Garbage" characters on a serial terminal are (almost?) invariably due to wrong baud rate - see: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/serial-communication
  3. Wrong baud rate is usually due to not running at the speed you thought; check by blinking a LED to see if you get the speed you expected

Well, I didn't: usually I'm not using Eclipse, when not being suggested by a gun at my head.

However, I can tell the results I get (along with such kind invitation) with a Xilinx/MicroBlaze project I'm running, on their Platform SDK. Launching that project (a few tens on thousands lines of code, and a few tens of source files) accounts for around 280-320 MB of private bytes, used by the IDE. AS -sigh- still wins.

VS 2010 with large web site solution loads 119K in ~10secs

VS 2013 Community Edition with a minimal solution loads 102K  in ~15sec.

AS 6.2 with minimal solution 438K and loads in ~30secs (hung first time I tried to load)

Happy Trails,

Mike
