There are some issues with running Atmel Studio under the Windows 8 preview. One is that the backend part of the program does not start, another is problems with the certificate for the Jungo usb driver.

Workarounds for now:

Locate the folder avrdbg in the installation, defaults to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.0\avrdbg on 64 bit system.
Copy all the dll-files into the codeCache-folder. This should get the backend running.

To fix the issue with the drivers, the Atmel certificate must be installed.
Locate the file
C:\Windows\inf\AtmelInf.cat
Access Properties->Digital Signatures.
Select Atmel Norway and Details
Select View Certificate
Select Install Certificate
Select Local Machine and default for the rest

This should install the certificate.

Then the drivers must be updated.
Open Device Manager, locate the Atmel Tools drivers under Other (the ones with a yellow mark)
RightClick->Update Driver->Search Automatically.
And you are set.
Only tested on Windows 8 64 bit.
We will post an update to AtmelStudio fixing this, but the above steps should get you going for now.

Hi Tryn/Lars,
just tried to install the avrDragon on a server 2012 release build (build number 9200).

But I see no way to go beyond the certificate check in atmelinf.cat.
c:\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log tells:
Key = avrdragon.inf
FilePath = C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\Temp\{233d73b2-3723-1848-8fd4-61679cafe815}\avrdragon.inf
Catalog = C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\Temp\{233d73b2-3723-1848-8fd4-61679cafe815}\atmelinf.cat
Verifying file against specific Authenticode(tm) catalog failed! (0x800b010a)
Error 0x800b010a: A certificate chain could not be built to a trusted root authority.

even putting the certificate into one of the trusted stores will not solve the problem.

will that one be fixed, soon?

Maybe make the cat update as a separate download.

regards
andy

Try to install the newest version of the drivers, found here:

http://www.atmel.no/beta_ware/

The certificate has been updated. Windows 8 is now supported.

This is also part of the upcoming service release of AtmelStudio.

Hi Lars,

thanks for pointing it out.
After installation of the usb driver the yellow bangs are no longer displayed.
but there is no way to talk to any kind of debugger from within Atmel Studio 6.0.
I'm getting - see error.png attached

avrdbg.exe is started for a few seconds, and is terminating with an exit code of 0.

avrdbg.exe is trying to access some paths which do not exists - see attached avrdbg.pml file, which can be opened using procmon.exe from sysinternals.com
at the far end.

any idea?

If I'm running the same procmon on a server 2008 R2 SP1, there are no accesses to those directories and files.

thanks in advance
andy

Did you try the copying described in the start of the first post? This issue can also be solved by adding the avrdbg-folder to the PATH. For the upcoming service release we have done that for the process created to run the backend.

Hi Lars,

thanks for pointing it out - some .rra files had been missing.
But the effecte is still the same - there is a popup asking for a connection to the debugger.
on Windows 8 I had no problems 3 weeks ago - but on Server2012 I'm facing this problem.

What kind of information do you need to track down the problem?

Hi Lars,
is anywhere in the Atmel Studio 6.0 .NET 3.5 needed?
I just installed it on another 2012 box and received a lot of popups, indicating that .NET 3.5 is missing.

running the AtmelUSB.exe without having 3.5 installed, I will received the promised 9 popups.
as soon as 3.5 is installed, no popups are displayed.
can that have anything to do with the problem?

You should not have received the nagging of .NET 3.5 installation. That have been fixed in the installer. Seems the version on AvrBeta needs an update.

However, we have just released Service Pack 1 of Atmel Studio, available on the Extension Gallery. New here is support for Windows 8 and the new SAM4L devices.

Lars,

Congratulations to you and your team!
You have done a great job.
After installation of SP1, Studio is running under Server 2012.

thanks for answering the questions so fast.

regards
andy

p.s. I will reinstall the studio on a clean system and report again within the next days, under the precondition that there is some time left.

Hi Lars,
I have installed the driver you provided in that atmel link but still in my device manager I can see that yellow stuff on my device USBasp after connecting my AVR.. Please help me out with this as soon as possible.

I am using Windows 8pro 64-bit...

Even I couldn't find any folder here C:\Windows\inf\AtmelInf.cat as earlier it was asking for a valid certificate.. I can find inf but no file with this name.. So even this way I have failed..

Please help me as quick as possible..

thankyou

usbasp is not a atmel programmer. You will have to talk to the people responsible for a windows 8 driver.

Ok if possible give me a brief detail from starting wha shall I do, I mean I'll remove every software and file of AVR from computer and than what all should I install and a link of those thing..

I'll be thankful to ur quick reply

Gautam,

As Morten has explained your question has nothing to do with Atmel or AS6.1 so this thread and this forum are the wrong place for your question. Should I split them off and move it to a new post in AVR Forum perhaps?

Hi Lars, I tried this on a laptop where I installed Studio 4, and had issues where the inf didn't have certificate info, and then where the hash didn't match when I copied a certificate from my desktop. Is there any way to get 4 working on win8? I tried 6.2 on my 3GHz desktop and I thought the clock speed had changed to 100MHz so on this 1GHz laptop it's absolutely not an option.
