Hi there,
as far as I know, connecting AVR to ext clock would not coz any trouble.
but you may make a mistake by changing the fuse (I assume you did).
it happens to me once,I use ponyprog2000.
you should be careful when you set the AVR fuses using ponyprog.
compare them with your AVR datasheet.
keep in mind that when you check a check box on the ponyprog configuration window, it means logicaly 0 (cleared). they are inverted.
here is what i do in the past:
1.apply an external clock signal to XTAL1 pin with the proper frequence (luckily i remember which bit on the fuse I checked, so i can give the proper freq, in my case <1KHz).
2.Set the fuses for 8 Mhz ext clock.
then you are ready to roll...
I hope this helps

but my problem is.
i extract de m8 of the main circuit and make de ISP in one breadboard. its lucky for me the ext clock was set cristal 8mhz , and then run ****happy*****happy***, load, save, works fine.... but i erase the chip (not the fuses) and restart m8 (turn off and on), and m8 stop respond .. not respond to programmer anymore...

the solution will be put the m8 in HVP and reprogram all chip completly.????? or exist another way for that????
