Hello:

I have been using the stk500 for a good while programming the atmega48. However about a week ago it began running VERY slowly...What used to take 15 seconds to program a device now takes about 2 minutes (whether chip on stk500 or using ISP & target PCB).

I happen to have a 2nd stk500 & simply swapping them out gives me my original high programming speed (using the same target board), Is there some sort of speed setup that is remembered in the STK500? I can't seem to find any "setups" to chage this. Both STK's have the same jumpers installed, only one is about 8 times faster than the other. What's wrong? Both are set to use the stk500 3.69 Mhz clock (but I don't think this would changed the ISP programming speed)

Think i read that the new firmware upgrade that gets installed in stk500 (well it was the AvrISP but might also apply to stk500) , when upgrading to the newest : AVR Studio
Initially lovers the spi speed , as default.

You might want to check that setting (but i dont know where .... it must be somewhere in studio)

Hey,

Did you try adjusting the SPI speed - not just the clock speed, but if you have V2.0 firmware the SPI speed.

To avoid misunderstandings "SPI-speed" is called "ISP Freq." in the AVRStudio 4.11SP2 STK500/AVRISP-plugin for firmware 2.x (in the Board-Dialog). The ISP-Freq. does not depend on the setting in "STK500 Osc" which is the clock the STK500 generates for a target that is not "fused" to use its internal RC.

I have experienced the same problem with the STK500. I eventually cured it by reprogramming the STK500's firmware. See AVR Studio's help.

Hope this works for you too.

Good luck.
