Hi community,

i want to ask if AtmelStudio 6 (6.1) still supports the Atmel AVRISP STK500 USB ISP Programmer.

I want to buy one from seeedstudio.com but im not sure if it works with the AtmelStudio6 :/

Thx & mfg

AS6.1 has an option to add STK500 support but that is to talk to a real STK500:

So as long as your device operates IDENTICALLY to a real STK500 then AS6 will not be able to tell the difference. But if not you will have to drive it externally with avrdude.exe instead. Of course you can add menu or toolbar entries to AS6 to invoke an external tool such as avrdude so there's no real reason it should "feel" any different to you controlling the thing from within AS6 anyway (even for the Atmel programmers it invokes atprogram.exe behind the scenes I think).

I would be 99.95% confident that the SeedStudio device will appear correctly as a STK500. I have written clone software that works fine with AS4 or AS6. So it is not difficult to get it right.

OTOH, SeedStudio is not much cheaper than a regular Atmel AVRISP-2. And with a genuine Atmel device, you know that it will be fully supported and upgradeable.

Not really. atprogram is a cli frontend for atbackend, which is the common part between atprogram and Atmel Studio. I guess atprogram can be thought of as another frontend to atbackend. The role of atbackend is tool communication, programming and debugging among ohter things.
