Hi

When you turn on a Hitachi HD44780 based LCD, should anything come on the screen as like an initalisation or something, rather than just a line of faint black squares?

thanks

NOPE! Nothing but faint black squares (you can make them darker if you adjust the contrast ) untill you initialise the LCD and start to write something to it. :)

hmm this is where my problems are starting, I can't get the thing to initalise (using the memory mapped IO of my STK200.

I might probaly abandon that and try port pin based io.

In the beginning like this, one doesnt know if its a hw or sw problem. It should work mem mapped if its hooked up right... you need to show us the sch of how you think you've got it hooked up, and show us the code, and we also need to know avr type and speed to check the timing delays etc.
