Decades ago, LM2576 were a good chose, espesial since "Switcher made simple" existed. Whay may be the chose for to day?
There are newer versions of the simple switcher family. The issue is they run faster and therefore the layout becomes more critical. There are also fully packaged products like the 785 series from Recom.
Simple switchers are still available. If you like them use them. I like Linear Technology for most and will use other companies for price if need be. (LT for medical and aerospace, others for something like a portable toothbrush which will sell in the million per year quantity.)

These were still available in Jeddah in the mid 1980s. A variety of flavours too. I liked the chilli-like hot ones. I just cannot remember now what they were called and which plant was used.
