I see JTAGICE clones selling on eBay for less than $10, e.g. this:

Any experiences with these?
Are they really JTAGICE clones that will work seamlessly with Atmel Studio?

I already own an ETT JTAGICE-1 clone. So I can't see much point in buying a $8.60 Chinese clone.
However, I would guess that it will work exactly the same. i.e. fine with AS4, IAR, Rowley.
It only works with old chips.
It will never work with AS6.
So if you only use mega32 or other supported chip, go and buy one.
If you use debugWIRE or any modern AVRs, buy a $49 Dragon or $99 JTAGICE3. Of course, that $49 or $99 is often inflated by tax and shipping. The $8.60 is "delivered to your door".
Your link did not work. Try this : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AVR-JTAG-USB-emulator-Debugger-download-AVR-JTAG-ICE-Download-Programmer-atmega-/200908327724?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ec711cb2c
Note that this particular seller is very slow.
David.

ATmega16;
ATmega162;
ATmega169;
ATmega32;
ATMega323;
ATMega64;
ATmega128,
(and later "A" variants of the same chips). If you are happy to stick with these 10+ year old AVRs you will be fine. I guess you can't really go wrong for $10!
Thanks a bunch! I didn't realize it would only work for old chips and with old versions of AS. I will buy the JTAGICE3. Nice of Atmel to drop the price.
NB previous discussion about what JTAGICE actually supports split to here:
