Hey all,
I am here in Japan (Shin-Yokohama) for the next 3 months and I am trying to find an electronics shop close by. The language barrier is pretty high and I am having problems getting my intention across. Asking for electronics stores nets me the big department style stores with DVD players and washing machines.
Does any one have any suggestions or hints on how to find these places? I know of the Akihabara in Tokyo which is good ( and expensive ), but I would like to find someplace closer to where I am.
Thanks,
-Ben |

Ben,
Sorry I can't help with Japan, but I've been through the same thing here in China. Once you locate a market, I've found it best to log onto the manufacturers website and see if they have datasheets for the product you want in Japanese. Print out the foreign language (for you!) datasheet and take it with you.
Another big problem I have here in the markets in China is the people in the shops usually have no clue as to what they are selling. Unless you know a specific part number you can oftentimes be out of luck. |

Amateur radio is very popular in Japan. See if you can find a radio club near you; the hams will welcome a chance to practice their English and will help you find what you need.

I didn't realize there was a language barrier when I sent the message above. So, the names of the stores:
秋月電子: Akidzuku Dennshi
マルツ: Marutsu
せんごく/千石: Senngoku
And here are some parts names and words in Japanese to get you started:
Capacitor: コンデンサ : Condenser (konndennsa)
Resistor: 抵抗器 : Teikouki
Transistor: トランジスタ : Toranjisuta
Micro Controller: マイコン : Maikonn (to say AVR say AVR Maikonn)
Need any more? |

Well Kagetsuki since you are here...
I'm after some blades for a wire stripper that was sold by AB Engineering in England but was made in Japan I believe. The English company no longer sells that equipment unfortunately.
So I was wondering if you knew of a company that was/is called Air Vessel and the part number is EW-200. The tool came in a bench type or hand, battey operated type (the size of a torch).
I have searched the web, got in contact with the original supplier, posted on this forum but no results. Maybe you can still buy them in Japan?? I can post a picture if it helps, the thread here is gone. |

John, I can surely keep an eye out for you.
By 'torch', you mean a battery-operated, hand held light, right?
Post pictures of the entire device, one that shows the model number and one of the blades. I think that will give adequate info for searching.

Ben,
If you need just a few IC's and can wait a week, log on to the MFR. website and ask for samples. Maxim for example will priority ship up to 10pcs anywhere in the world. Texas instruments os OK, Nat Semi as well is OK. We all know how Atmel is...

| This is the wire stripper. A bit rough but it's the paper copy from about 18 years ago. The CW200 could run from 6V batteries but the stripping head/blades are the same AFAIK. You can see the spare parts numbering on the first page at the bottom. |

Perhaps you are talking about the heated air nipper from Vessel: http://www.vessel.co.jp/anp/product/nkh_nth/index.html ???
EDIT:
I misread your post, I doubt it is the heated model. Vessel has a variety of air nipper tools, and a variety of blades for those. Unfortunately I'm under the assumption most of these are for cutting wire/cable clean through. It looks like a lot of their products and parts are shipped overseas, so perhaps your CW200 is a renumbered product produced by Vessel and sold as OEM or perhaps only the blades are from Vessel? Since it says "Air" I'm guessing they are blades from air nippers, of which there are several straight crimp/straight cutters. Weather or not the current models are the same or use the same parts is something I'm not quite sure of. Perhaps if you could take a picture of the unit I could send it to Vessel and see if they could shed some light on the situation? |

Posting 2 shots. The one for the label is upside down so it can be read. Thanks for trying. |

| Most definitely not something from the Vessel site I found. It may simply be an older tool though, so I'll send an E-Mail and see if we can at least determine weather or not it came from the Vessel I found. |

Sorry for the late reply, my grandfather died and I had to go up to north (Iwate) for the funeral and had some other things to do as well there. Unfortunately it appears Vessel has done many contract and OEM jobs, so while it is possible they produced it or parts for it not even they are completely sure. I can tell you they reported not being familiar with the machine pictured, but may have manufactured a portion of it that may not be visible.
Sorry. |

Sorry to hear about your grandfather, not a good thing to experience the death of a loved one.
Thanks for trying with the above, at least I know I tried all avenues before I throw it out when the blade finally becomes blunt. The pain will be getting a replacement at a reasonable price. |

When I was in Japan a few years ago while in the Navy,
there was a place to go. as I understand it at the time it was THE place for parts. It may have changed, I don't know. Here is a link with info about the place.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akihabara
Hope it's still a good place for parts.
Good Luck! |

Akihabara is awesome, and many of the places I linked to are there. In fact, there is probably no place in the world you can find as many high quality components and tools. Before anyone tries to counter what I just said with comments about the SEG Market in China: it's one fucking building you are comparing to the entire city of Akihabara which you no doubt have not traversed. And if you aren't Chinese you'll be buying pallets of mis-labeled or non-functional chips for sure. The two people I know who have been there both ended up buying non-functional and poor quality imitation parts. |
