Hi, I've been looking over the STK to better understand the hardware. I think I'm right in thinking there's one RAM IC under the board and one Flash IC for U-boot and so on.

I know the IC@s on the 1002 are bus switching devices, why are they needed? What do they do please?

Thanks
Nick

They switch certain signals between two configurations, based on the jumper settings on the STK1002. For example, the second ethernet interface shares some signals with the LCD interface, so there's a switch that controls whether those signals are routed to the ethernet PHY or the LCD panel.

You won't need them if you're doing a custom design. They're only there to make the STK1000/STK1002 combo more flexible.
