Hi.
I just bought some gal16v8d, built myself a GALBLAST minimum effort programmer (i can't find some parts for the full schematic) and ..... it doesn't work.
Does anyone have any experience with GAL's ?
My chips (brand new) all read the PES(UES) as zeroes.
What would be the correct PES value for a Lattice GAL16V8D?
I've rebuilt the schematic two times now and still nothing.
Thanks. |

I'm using XP with UserPort which allows (or at least should) direct access to the lpt port (378).
If i don't start the userport driver, the galblast software reads the PES filled with FF, if i start it, it reads the PES filled with zeroes . |

I wouldn't bother with GALs for a new system, use CPLDs. They use in-circuit programming: the programming cables are quite cheap, or you can make your own.

Yes, i think i'll switch to CPLD, or even FPGA
But i'm still frustrated by these GAL's, i saw this as a steping stone for the bigger devices (i don't have any experience with logic design). |

Our experiences shows, that GALs from diffirent producents requaried diffirent programming alghoritms.
We have a programmer that can program GALs only from one producent. To programming GAL this programmer requaried a file in jedec format. We known only one program which produce jedec files in format understanded by our programmer.
GALs produced by the other producents are programmed, but it contens is diffirent that expected. The same witch the jedec files obtained from other programs.

It says here http://www.republika.pl/gustaw47/projekty/gal-alg.txt how the PES sould look like :
16V8D: 00 05 1A A1 4D A5 03 06
Still mine reads zeroes. Probably it did the bredboard circuit wrong. If you have any tips for me, i'm all ears (eyes actually)
Thanks. |

I do not know if CUPL are from before LATIS bought most of that kind of program.
I used WinCupl from LATIS. That program made JEDEC-files. That filformat are very old, and i gues that Galblast also are based on that format.
JEDEC-files are plain ASCII-files, readable by a texteditor.
As a rool, each GAL have his own programming algoritm, and a good programmer reads the chip and verify that the JEDEC file are corect.
It is wise to verify that the programmer are able to program the chip before you buy it.
You may put a blank GAL into the programmer and read it. Goto editmode of CUPL and verify that the file are corect.
I do not know the Galblast. Do you hav a URL where ti find it?
