I downloaded Solidedge ST5. It is a 7z.SFX file.
-That is 1 giant 2GB file that takes about an hour to download.
-Clicking that download keeps my computer busy for half an hour (seemingly doing nothing, exept for showing de 'busy wheel'). May be that is for some antivirus check? (I use MSE)
-Finally it does start to extract, that takes another 20 minutes.
-Multiply waiting times by 3 until discovering that 'nothing is wrong...'

I have to try several setup configurations now, and I don't like this waiting process of about 1 hour every time.

I tried to drop this 7z.SFX on 'ExtractNow' program hoping that I could extract everything to some directory (from there the setup should run immediately, I hope). No success with grabbing an extracted file.

What is the solution?

Download and install 7-Zip.

From File Explorer, right-click on a .RAR or .7Z file and you have a "7-Zip" and an "Open with" option. Choose 7-Zip.

Personally, I would avoid WINRAR.EXE but 7-ZIP seems to work quite well.

You can browse inside the RAR and copy/paste individual files or folders.

YMMV.

David.

It's file name is: SolidEdgeV105ENGLISH_32Bit.exe

I cannot find an option as 'open with...'

With ExtractNow I can open almost every compressed file. It is my 'universal extractor'.

But apparently this .exe can only be opened by itself?
I can only stop it (from being busy for half an hour) in TaskManager by killing 'consent.exe'

Many archivers can detect a self-extracting archive.
You should try the "7-Zip" entry. Obviously there is no "Open with" for an EXE.

David.

I managed to install ST5, but found no alternative for the time consuming setup.

For those interested: I think I got this ST5 highschool edition. https://www.plm.automation.siemens.com/nl_nl/academic/resources/solid-edge/educators/highschool-download.cfm?

It is full 3D, and I am now playing with Nastran (finite elements deformation).
I have been using (officially free!) SolidEdge2D before, and that is an excellent package to make 2D drawings. I could make some nice linkage simulations/studies with it.
