[Moderators Note: This sticky thread is only for posting links. Please do not add any posts unless they have a link to a useful article/book. Thanks, --MMC]

I know this is a bit off-topic but thought that the value might make up for it.

Here is a link to a list of free online electronics publications:

http://tangentsoft.net/elec/reviews/free.html

Lots of very good books/guides to download.

Here is a book about communication. It address many interesting things. It is not the classical communication book (AM+FM+PCM).

Highly recommended.

The Scientist and Engineer's Guide to Digital Signal Processing

This does get rave reviews at Amazon, but also consider this "review" if you are going to purchase a hard copy:
Quote:
A great book, but his newer edition is cheaper!, January 3, 2003 ...
Evarything that the other reviewers say is true. However, his newer book is an update with added material, improve typesetiing, and a CD with programs.
Buy the new book, which has a slightly different title, "DSP for Engineers and Scientists..."

I believe that this refers to "Digital Signal Processing: A Practical Guide for Engineers and Scientists"
ISBN: 075067444X

National Semiconductor (www.national.com) has some very good application notes on RS422/485 electrical requirements and on RS232. Here are some. Do a search on the website by application number. All are pdf. While the emphesis is on National Products, the general information is very useful and comprehensive.

AN-912 Common Data Transmission Parameters and their Definitions

AN-914 Understanding Power Requirements in RS-232 Applications

AN-1031 TIA/EIA-422-B Overview
AN-979 The Practical Limits of RS-485
AN-1057 Ten Ways to Bulletproof RS-485 Interfaces
AN-759 Comparing EIA-485 and EIA-422-A Line Drivers and Receivers in Multipoint Applications
AN-903 A Comparison of Differential Termination Techniques
An-409 Transceivers and Repeaters Meeting EIA RS-485 Interface Standard
AN-214 Transmission Line Drivers and Receivers for TIA/EIA Standards RS-422 and RS-423

Maxim (www.maxim-ic.com) also has some outstanding notes in this area.

App Note 083: Fundamentals of RS-232 Communications

Guidleines for Proper Wiring of am RS-485 (TIA/EIA RS-485-A) Network

RS-485 (EIA/TIA-485) Differential Data Transmission System Basics

Hello All,

Just saw that there is a Wikibook on the Atmel AVR, it's still lacking a

The wikibook project is amazing. We used a wiki at work and now I am a proponent. It would be great if this group had a wiki to put all these stickies. Oh, I made a rhyme!

here is a link for a company in my country which publishes books, as well as makes compilers (only for PIC at the moment, but from what they told me there will be C, pascal and basic compilers for AVR too soon) and devboards (lots of uCs). on their english part of the site go to books and there are several microcontroller, PLC and general electronics ones which could be downloaded for free in whole or in part.

Here is an app note from Tektronix on debugging CAN, TWI (I2), and SPI. Very useful even though it focusses on Tek equipment.

I find patents a very useful source of ideas and now we have Google's new patent search
http://www.google.com/patents

The advanced search allows a search on author, number, dates, classification, ...

For example, your latest robot needs an "impact sensor", this search returns a neat low cost patent that reminds me of a loudspeaker, well a quick mod to a loudspeaker (cut the cone out, glue a small weight to the centre) and you have a direction sensitive impact sensor.

First: There is a similar list of free eBooks at http://www.edaboard.com/ . I guess a lot of you already are aware of these but I youst mention them for the community...

Second: Here is a Norwegian resource, for those of you reading Norwegian language. Site is located at http://www.romteknologi.no and is related to space technology and satelite systems. These books covers "remote analysis and geographical informationsystems", "Spacetech. and satelite systems", "Telemetry", and "physics".

Third: And for PID... This is a good beginning

The following pdf is aboute EMC basics, however in Norwegian only. So for those of you living in scandinavia and need an intro into EMC, go to
http://www.nortelco.no and enter site "Kompetanse" and "EMC Kurs". There will be a link to the document "EMC basic" in the site popping.

Here is a direct link:
http://www.nortelco.no/default.asp?FILE ... sider).pdf

Edit:
They've changed their site. Now you have to select "Nortelco Electronics AS" first when entering http://www.nortelco.no . Direct link, however, is still the same...

This is not a Book , but a verry informative paper about Triacs and their use

http://www.avorex.com/TRIAC.doc

Seems verry informative , even though the uC selection is "questionable" Smile

Edit: And the code

Everything you want to know (or wouldn't want anybody to know) about how data can be extracted from microcontrollers and memory chips. Its a PHD thesis, but it is almost light, informative reading. Lots of really nice photographs. The link takes you to the page from which the PDF file (11 MB with 144 pages) can be downloaded.

2001 Magnetics Design Handbook

A collection of articles by legendary master of magnetics, Lloyd Dixon. Highly technical. includes a good intro to magnetics, and can be helpful for anybody designing a switching power supply or the magnetics for a switching power supply.

2001 Magnetics Design Handbook - MAG100A
http://focus.ti.com/docs/training/catal ... =SEM401014

From there you can download individual chapters or click on the link "All 2001 Magnetics Design Handbook Sections in a single compressed zip file" to download it as one file.

Alternatively, you can download it as a single zip file by using this URL (working as of August 5, 2008)
http://www-s.ti.com/sc/techzip/slup222.zip

If this link fails (they may re-arrange the site someday), go to www.ti.com and enter "MAG100A" in the search for key words box. That should get you to the page with the PDF files.

anybody have a link for design of application/demo boards using different components? (like power supplies , crystals, passive components, drivers, etc. something like the STK500 for AVR micros)

PATTERNS FOR TIME -TRIGGERED EMBEDDED SYSTEMS:
Building reliable applications with the 8051 family of microcontrollers

by Michael J. Pont

http://www.tte-systems.com//books/pttes

This substantial (1000-page) book, and associated CD, together describe the first comprehensive set of ‘design patterns’ to support the development of embedded systems based on the 8051 family of microcontrollers. In total, PTTES contains details of more than 70 useful software patterns, complete with guidelines to help you apply these techniques in your own projects: full source code for all of the patterns is included on the associated CD.

What are the key features of this book?

The focus is on the rapid development of software for time-triggered, embedded systems, using software patterns. The meaning of ‘time-triggered’ is explained in Chapter 1; software patterns are introduced in Chapter 2.
The systems are all based on microcontrollers, from the widely-used 8051 family. This vast family of devices is manufactured by a number of companies, including Philips, Infineon, Atmel, Dallas, Texas Instruments and Intel. The range of different 8051 microcontrollers available is reviewed in Chapter 3.
Time-triggered techniques are the usual choice in safety-related applications, where reliability is a crucial design requirement. However, the need for reliability is not restricted to systems such as drive-by-wire passenger cars, aerospace systems or monitoring systems for industrial robots: even at the lowest level, an alarm clock that fails to sound on time, or a video recorder that operates intermittently may not have safety implications but, equally, will not have high sales figures. The patterns presented here allow time-triggered techniques to be simply and cost-effectively applied in virtually any embedded project.
The applications discussed in detail must carry out tasks or respond to events over time intervals measured in milliseconds. This level of response can be economically and reliably achieved with an 8-bit microcontroller using the approaches discussed in this book, and is appropriate for many applications, up to and including aircraft flight control systems.
The software is implemented entirely in ‘C’. All of the source code in the book appears on the enclosed CD.
How do you build time-triggered embedded systems?

The time-triggered systems in this book are created using schedulers. Briefly, a scheduler is a very simple ‘operating system’ suitable for use in embedded applications (see Chapter 13 for a detailed introduction to this topic).
A range of complete scheduler architectures for applications involving a single microcontroller is described

The Robot Builder's Cookbook by Owen Bishop:

[it's not clear whether that site has a legal right to host that text so link removed]

This is REALLY good DYI book on building robots. It uses PIC, but the hardware part of it can be very well used to build a robot with AVR uC.

All pages can be viewed online.
