My dad came home with this video yesterday. Things like this is a common occurrence. Also that mud - it's the worst goo in the world. Dries hard as cement and tends to ruin everything it touches.

| Hmm. Never saw the insides of any of my transfer cases. Interesting, all over the place there. |

| What the hell is that stuff? I could use it to patch my floor in the garage. |

| Anybody see the video of the Chinese girl walking down the sidewalk and falling through? Now that's a rude way to start your day. |

Watched it this morning, but apparently it's old news already.
Just walking along and the sidewalk fell in under her. |

I am having a small problem with that video clip after watching it a few times.
The girl was not walking towards that 'spot' until the very last step or two, and the 'sidewalk' magically breaks in almost a perfect square?
And I am not sure about Chinese sinkholes, but usually anything on top of a sinkhole "sinks" into the hole. And considering that the concrete that gave way was so thin I would think that more of the sidewalk would have caved.
Sorry, this one does not 'Hold Up'
EDIT: Looked one more time. I suppose they don't use reinfocement in their sidewalk concrete like the rest of the world does? Given the girl does not appear to be that heavy, and the 'hole' not that large(about her exact diameter), some mesh in the concrete would have sustained her just fine. |

I can not recall a single sidewalk in Swedem maed out of concrete (in the sense "moulded in place"). It's either tarmac, concrete slabs (400x400 mm usually), or stone (typically 100x100x100 mm or so) or a combination of those.
I always thought that sidewalks in concrete was a typically US thing. |

US sidewalks are pored concrete slabs with reinforcemnt screen in them so they don't crack apart as easily in weather extremes, under weight etc.
Regardless of what you build your path with, I strongly believe that the video is a fake. Scuse me, I have a fresh slab of concrete on the oven, gotta check it |

It is quite common to have "poured insitu concrete" footpaths without any reinforcing steel here in Melbourne. They are in front of my house. From time to time (like last month) a contractor will travel around the city on his ride on grinder and grind down any high spots caused by uplifting tree roots to prevent tripping accidents.
I believe the video ... if only because it actually exposes "shoddy" workmanship. No one would stage that.
Cheers,
Ross |
