Just downloaded and installed the official version. The same problems encountered with RC3 occured. See
http://www.avrfreaks.net/index.php?name ... mp;t=85782

After taking some 20 minutes with the HDD led fullly on (meanwhile JAVA updated, is this part of the install??) and unable to cancel the install (cancel button greyed out) I killed the install from the task manager.

Reinstalling again brought up the same error 1706 screen but this time the installation completed after installing a signed driver.

After several minutes downloading it all I got was a file with zero bytes instead of the expected 117 MB!

The second time it downloaded OK, and installed without any problems. I tried assembling and compiling a couple of programs and everything still works. I'm using WinXP, BTW.

I installed it (32bit Vista SP2) and it got all the way to the end with the dialog showing the [Finish] button but on clicking that it has left a windowless entry on my taskbar. About the only entry on its system menu is an "About..." and when I click that it tells me it is "Installshield V 15.0". I guess I'll have to use Task Manager to blitz it.

BTW as I posted elsewhere, I couldn't avoid filling in the registration form to get the download but others can by going direct to this link:

http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod ... 4Setup.exe

Interesting in the release notes:
Quote:
The following (6) new parts have been added to AVR Studio since 4.17:

ATmega64HVE, ATtiny461A, ATtiny20, ATtiny40 (Simulator support only), ATmega169PA, ATmega649P

So Tiny20 and Tiny 40 are about to join the Tiny10?

Also

New Features
QT600 support in programming dialog in AVR Studio

What's a "QT600" then?

EDIT: just answered my own question:

I'm very glad I never bothered with Vista. Smile

At the university where a friend of mine works they banned Vista from every university PC, including laptops supplied to staff.

Hmm.. just tried to install on a windows 7 64bit system. but it fails!
It takes me through the startup questions, but after choosing the install directory, the installer minimizes to the taskbar, and nothing else happens at all..

The chosen directory is never created. I have tried running it in XP mode, but no success in that either.

Anyone else tried to install on windows 7, 64bit?

Program installed successfully after 30 or more minutes because I had forgot the installer running!!!

It just pop a screen that said that the program finish installing successfully!!!!

So the only solution so far is to let it for infinite time until completion!

I got a new Dell laptop with 64-bit Win7 the other day and just installed AVR Studio 4.18 on it without any problems.

Just wondering with 4.18 and Win7/64 if it works OK out of the box with USB drivers for jtag ice 2 or had to go through some tweaking?

Don't know if it works with Win7/64, but it doesn't work with 4.18 and Win7/32.
What is the latest working version for Win7/32?
Or should I wait for a fix?

Started install on Win-XP-SP3 15 minutes ago and so far nothing, but a windowless button on the taskbar. No HD activity, no sign of life. By post here I am encouraged to wait another 15 minutes, so lets give it a go.
BTW the university network is strongly firewalled. Is it trying to use some ridiculous ports?

You shouldn't have. It doesn't take 15 minutes, even on my ancient 1 GHz Xeon. Something else is up.

I had the same problems on my Win7 x64 machine. Basically I took the following steps and avr studio 4.18 installed without a problem. Unfortunately I don't know where the key is in these steps that actually solves the problem. But if you can replicate the steps, I am confident you might get somewhere Smile

1. Disable UAC
2. restart computer (you must do this)
3. disable network connection
4. close all programs (including antivirus)
5. Run avr studio 4.18 setup
6. You can install SP2 update at this point
7. Turn UAC back on
8. Reboot machine
(remember to re-enable network connection)

My gut feeling tells me UAC has something to do with it but since people are having the same problem on XP (which doesn't have UAC) tells me something else may be the cause.

HTH.

I'm having the same install problems on 2 different 32-bit windows XP systems. I'm new to AVR parts and trying to get set up, but if I can't get the tools installed I'll have to find a different solution.

Has anyone figured out a cause or a workaround for this?

Mike

Silly question but you are logged in as Admin or with Admin privileges?
