I need an adapter that will let me interface an RS-485 or RS-422 line to a PC via USB. I'd like something that isolates the RS-485 line as it's coming from a outdoor sensor and I'd like to keep any induced surges on the line out of the PC.

Can anyone recommend a good one? I've seen many advertised, but I know that some are complete rubbish, so am looking for opinions on which ones to consider.

Thanks.

Advantech ADAM4561. Uses a prolific pl2303. Opto isolation wont give much lightning protection or surge protection.

Maxim has several all in one RS485 transceivers with up to 2500Vrms isolation, like the MAX1480. They're much more expensive non-isolated transceivers, but only require a couple of external resistors-- optos & transformers are built in. Combine with your choice of USB-TTL serial adapters--just be sure you pick one that breaks out the proper flow control lines if you're doing half-duplex.

I'm using LTC1545 in a current project. Used it before in another project and so far had no problems.

The transformer used is a Wurth 31160.

Of course that's only half of the solution in your case.
