I have a 30A DC solid state relay that sources 12V to a 11A motor when it turns on. All of a sudden, its outputting 5V instead of 12V. I think I zapped the SSR. So do I put an RC snubber across the relay or across the load? What values? Thanks!

First off, you see what the SSR data sheet says.

A motor with 11A run current is likely to have a far greater inrush current or stall current.

I would have thought that the SSR would have its own protection.

If your design is within the ratings, ask for a replacement SSR.

Regarding snubbers. The RC goes across the motor. By inference, a SSR does not have a coil. Hence no inductance !

I am sure that there are official tables for selecting the R and C. Basically you have to absorb the inductive energy when you abruptly change the current. Normally this is when the current switches off rather than on.
