| Except - those nasty Russian nixies with upside down '2's instead of '5's... love the rest of it, though. |

Using LEDs with Nixies is mauvais ton, using a blue led is a mortal sin.
@Neil: it's not like Nixies are perfect displays. Upside down 2's give them character ;) |

Yeah. It makes them 'orrible!
The nixie clock under my TV has bare circuit boards and four ZM1210s sticking up on wires!

| I didn't want to disclose the horrible truth but the number 3 in Russian nixies is also a Russian letter Z and they didn't even bother to turn it upside down like they did with a 0. |

I never did understand why people always use LEDs to light up their nixies. Seems just so... lame. I guess I'm too much of a purist |

| Not always at all. My nixies are all pure. But in my Numitron clock I used a LED for the dot: I just couldn't find an appropriate lightbulb and I've had a nice orange LED handy. |

Oh my. Your education is sadly neglected.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon_lamp
When you put DC to a neon lamp, only one electrode glows. A nixie tube is just a neon lamp with the electrodes shaped like numbers, so you can light whichever you want. |

But I learned it now . I'm actually dusting off some stuff I learned about 20 years ago. Here: |

And from there you can go to a whole range of logic gates; with sufficient enthusiasm you can make a computer.
Here's a question: why is it that old neons flicker in the dark but appear solid in light? Particularly noticeable if you have a whole apparatus room full of neon mains indicators. |

| The NE-(don't remember which exactly) neon bulbs that I used for dots in a couple of my nixieclocks really have hard time ionizing in darkness, they are photosensitive. |
