Hi everyone I'm a fairly new AVR programmer and I have what is hopefully a quick and easy question.

I have an AVRISP mkII programmer (made in 2009) that I had correctly working in AVR Studio 4 in Vista. When I upgraded to Windows 7 I also installed AVR Studio 5, and now I am having trouble getting the software to detect the ISP.

AVR Studio 5 is up-to-date, and AVR Jungo USB 10.2 is installed. When connecting the programmer via USB to interface PC to MCU, a red light shows when power is not connected, and a steady green light is shown when the MCU is powered.

Trying to connect through Tools -> Programming shows the device ID, but when clicking "Apply" it gives an error:

Quote:
Timestamp: 2011-06-12 13:18:35.349
Severity: ERROR
ComponentId: 20000
StatusCode: 0

Unable to connect to tool context: 'Atmel.VsIde.AvrStudio.Services.TargetService.TCF.Internal.Services.Remote.ToolProxy+ToolContext'.

I've been researching the problem for several hours and just can't get it working. ANY help would be very much appreciated.

TL;DR: AVRISP mkII won't connect to AVR Studio 5 even though it is correctly powered and all software is up-to-date.

Thanks a bunch,
Chris

Chris, Sorry to hear you are having this problem - I am also:(

There are a couple other threads posted in the last couple of days with some info, but they didn't help me.... yet. This thread was referenced: http://www.avrfreaks.net/index.php?name ... highlight=

But I'm not sure that is the total answer for it's dated in 2008.

I sure hope you find a solution, if you do - please post.

I'm also having an issue with the avrisp mkii. I have a 32 bit laptop running windows 7 and a 64 bit laptop running windows 7. The 32 bit can program using the AVRISP mkii only with avr studio 5 beta 1, and the 64 bit cannot program with any of the beta or full versions. I've been using AVR studio 5 as a code editor and then just program my devices using avr studio 4 which works on both the 32 and 64 bit machines.

Does anyone have any idea why studio 4 works and 5 doesn't?

Same problem here. Interesting note:
- Works on work PC (again, all same up-to-date versions)
- Doesn't work on home PC.

The only difference I am aware of is the edition of Windows 7. (home addition\something else at work).

Has anyone seen this using a AVRDRAGON? I'll get a dragon if that fixes it, but I can't do much without being able to program it.

I'm having the exact same problem. Windows 7 x64 home edition on my sony laptop with AVR studio 5, no luck. It works perfectly with studio 4 though.

Me,too! Crying or Very sad

Does anyone have a fix or patch for this?

It might be the 64-bit OS. But I haven't confirmed it yet.

It works on my Work Laptop (32-bit Windows 7) running AVR Studio 4.

But, it doesn't work on my Home Laptop (64-bit Windows 7) running AVR Studio 5.

I will try installing AVR Studio 5 on my Work Laptop and see if it will work.

Most likely it doesn't work because AS5 was released before it was completed and support for some things will catch up later? See other threads reporting the same. Most "seasoned" forum members are holding off on using AS5 and are still using AS4 as a workaround.

I like the look and feel of AS5, but I need to get work done too. I'll wait.

If you guys get it working post your fix.

Thanks

I suspect it has something to do with the Windows 7 driver. I just installed Studio 5 on Win7 Pro 64-bit SP1, a libUSB driver from http://www.avrfreaks.net/modules/Freaks ... driver.zip (the 32-bit driver http://www.avrfreaks.net/modules/Freaks ... driver.zip works, too), and abcminiuser's LUFA XPLAIN PDI/Serial Bridge that emulates AVRISP mkII on Xplain. Works like charm.

BTW, there's a thread about the exact same errors with Dragon.

Having the exact same issue.. I noticed that while AVR studio does recognize that jtagice has been plugged in, it gives incorrect serial number! .. the same setup/drivers etc work perfectly for avr32 stdio on the same machine, in my case.

I tried using procexplorer to see what kind of files get loaded, but could not get a breakthough, other than this diff:

while avr32 studio says :
PID: 2940, Command line: "C:\Program Files\Atmel\AVR Tools\AVR32 Studio\plugins\org.eclipse.cdt.core.win32_5.1.0.200909110608\os\win32\x86\starter.exe" 148 5 SABreak0060F6D0 SAWait0060F6D0 SATerm0060F6D0 cmd.exe /C avr32program -c USB:090000006F8C -pjtagicemkii --gui cpuinfo --features

avr studio 5 does not, hence the mechanisms to talk to jtagice may be different.

Hope to get some answer to this, its killing me really.

Regards,
Anubhav

My problem is that I burnt out all of the usb ports coz accidently plugged in a circuit that was not isolated from AC. So I purchased a pci express to expand the USB, it installed a new usb host so I dont have additional USB slots on this machine, other than via PCI express, since yesterday I have been looking at how registry is playing around with the jungo and pci slot, there is definitely a problem here as I see a new ID is given to the jtagice device when its detected, instead of using its serial number, and the same ID is then displayed in AVR studio.

I have found a workaround to the problem, but its temporary and very nagging, hence I need a real solution.

I am using pci express card for USB expansion, and jtag driver does not seem to agree with the pci usb root.
- I used regmon to identify all reg nodes used once device is plugged into the system
- observed that a new node is created each time the device is switched on (around 10 related keys are modified).
- I had to manuaaly make changes to all of them, to replace the ID given my pci express root hub, with serial number of jtag device.

Its working now, but I am very sure that is I disconnect it from where it is, and place it on another slot, it will fail.

So the question is - jungo + pciexpress usb (3.0) compatibility.

I have what I assume is the same problem with the JTAGICE MKII-CN (the red box one from mcuzone) that arrived today. Same error and the serial number comes up with ampersands in it (not sure if that is correct, this is the first time I've tried jtag):

Quote:
Unable to connect to tool JTAGICE mkII (6&2849E747&0&3)

Timestamp: 2012-01-01 00:29:48.158
Severity: ERROR
ComponentId: 20000
StatusCode: 0

Unable to connect to tool context: 'Atmel.VsIde.AvrStudio.Services.TargetService.TCF.Internal.Services.Remote.ToolProxy+ToolContext'.

Followed by:

Quote:
Failed to get JTAG daisy chain settings.

Timestamp: 2012-01-01 00:30:22.945
Severity: ERROR
ComponentId: 20000
StatusCode: 0

Unable to connect to tool context: 'Atmel.VsIde.AvrStudio.Services.TargetService.TCF.Internal.Services.Remote.ToolProxy+ToolContext'.

So far, no luck. The device shows up in the device manager, so the usb driver seems to be loading fine. I just can't deploy using the thing.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

(forgot to mention: I'm using a powered USB hub that connects back to the motherboard USB controller. No PCI cards here. The hubs supply enough power, as I've metered them in the past)

Pete

In case this helps you: Installing 5.1 beta (and manually copying over the firmware to the tools folder in my case) fixed it. I couldn't get anything out of 5.0, even after a reinstall. 5.1 must have some fix.

Here's how Studio reads the serial number of USB tools:

1. In both 5.0 and 5.1 you can go to Tools | Options | Debugger and turn on "Use Tool Polling" (set to true). Now restart Studio to make the change effective. Every second, the serial number will be read from all Jungo devices.

2. In AS5.1, the serial number of all USB devices is read whenever a USB device is plugged in, removed, or rebooted.

3. In AS5.0, the serial number was recovered from the registry key itself. That was unreliable (as many of you experienced) with remote hubs , different locales etc, but it did not read the serial number from the USB device at all.

In both 1 and 2, a USB descriptor string read request will be issued on USB devices at various times. If your design contains a USB driver, you may need to be aware of these requests.

I'm also having a problem running AVRISP MKII on Avr Studio 5.0:

Unable to enter programming mode. Please verify that the programmer is correctly attached to the target and that target power has been switched on. Also verify that the correct device and interface settings have been specified.

Timestamp: 2012-01-04 20:56:43.867
Severity: ERROR
ComponentId: 20100
StatusCode: 0

Programming session setup failed: TCF command: Device:startSession failed: Code:1 ,Service: ,Message from peer:Failed to enter programming mode. An error occured while executing command with ID 0x10.

I'm really new to programming AVRs so I'm not too happy about having this much trouble just getting a development environment up and running. I guess I have no choice but to download AVR Studio 4 and try that.
