yampp-3 to yampp-7 used VS1001. May be something you could re-use there:

(code appears to be GPL v2)

What usually works really well is to READ THE MANUAL.

You give no specifics man, just a broad "How do they work?" question, what do you honestly hope to get back as an answer? I'm sure if you ask how to for example use this or that register, you will get the answer you are looking for.

What is "special (not very complicated)? Educating yourself and making sure you are on top of the projects you undertake is part of the job. Why ELSE would anyone pay 800 Euro's an hour? If you don't have time for both projects, then you have a problem. The solution is to split your paycheck and hire someone else. Or stop sleeping.

I think he was making that offer, above.
(Albeit without any details or spec's yet provided)

VLSI have more chip and more easy start point modules.
I search easy and low cost solution.
VS1000 is ideal. Play audio file form external SD card memory. There is easy start kit http://www.vlsi.fi/en/products/vs1000module.html and of course there are sample firmware, full working and short example how to do it.
standard player (firmware) can play audio file . triggered via USB , USART or button.
I don't need USB , USART , just use button.
player is normal like other just special function.
what is special function????
on electronic I need have this:http://sk.farnell.com/te-connectivity/sls250pc04/slide-switch-5-pos/dp/1123964 and push button.
play-pause, next dir, previous file, next file .
if an memory are not directory then all work like normal player.
but if are there directory then if power on then playe file with same name like first directory.
example:
in root dir are directory with name a1, a2, a3 and in same root dir are file with name a1.ogg , a2.ogg , a3.ogg .
if power on player then play audio file a1.ogg and open directory a1 , if then push play then start play all audio file in actually opened dir. if push next dir then close dir a1 and play audio file a2.ogg and open dir a2 and so on .
4 pole slide switch is used for first char definition, 4 pole is called :
1 position - a, second position - b, third - c,fourth -d .
if slide switch is selected first position - a , then play audio file started with char a , and open dir with first name char a, if change switch to d then play audio file with first file name d and open dir with first char d.
if open dir and in this dir are other directory (sub directory) then do it again , play audio file with same name like directory. only if in directory (sub directory )are not other directory then play all file (loop in actual dir) And no matter how the file name call. if open file and in actual dir are more dir and more audio file , try play only file with same name dir.
push button can have more function like rewind, fast forward

this is my short specification of firmware.

I'm search which one what can change code in original firmware source code. of course I pay for this work , if don't find any one then contact original support VLSI. regards

Price and availability

Unit price 5 Euro (MOQ 100 pcs, default firmware, no audio content)
Available from VLSI Solution and Distributors

Optional Services

0.5 Euro / Unit custom firmware and audio content loading
Audio content preparation 800 Euro per project
Custom firmware modification 4000 Euro per project or 800 Euro/day
Production tester/firmware and content loader 1250 Euro (Manual device)

They offer to develop firmware themselves for 800E/day (or 4K per project) and do "audio preparation" which makes me think this is a proprietary interface and they do not want you to be able to do it yourself, otherwise they lose a source of revenue.

So my advice is use something else.

Why do they offer a programmer's guide then?

Who needs to read this document

This document describes the programming interface, register map and and integrated peripherals of the VS1000. It’s primarily meant for those that wish to add to the functionality of the ROM code in VS1000 or design completely new software for the chip.
I wish I had the time to take on this project now. But still, I didn't know about this chip and I quite like it for one of my projects.

Let's say this work requires 3 man months with 35 hour weeks. That's 525 hours at €800/hour so a total cost of €420,000. Now consider the alternative of an easily programmable AVR used to drive the thing externally and read a few buttons costing €2. Sure there's some development work there too but let's say that's only €120,000. So you have to ask yourself how many units you intend to make and is it cheaper to amortise €300,000 over that many units or add the cost of a €2 AVr to each?

You are going to have to make LOT of units to cover the VS1000 development costs I think!
