| I'm guessing a decent "grid" would require 1024 so I guess that's going to be in the realms of £300. |

1000 for £193 from China.
Of course, it might be difficult to get that many past customs as a gift...
You're going to need a fairly beefy power supply! |

| What is the "trigger" point for UK Customs. Here in OZ it is A$1000. No need for "gift games" |

Was £18 but an off-shore company called play.com (based in Jersey which is a tax haven) made a business out of selling cheap CDs and DVDs at under £18 and avoided VAT. So the tight wads at HMRC dropped it from £18 to £15.
play.com effectively folded. It still exists but they've been bought out and they don't have the "edge" they once had so there's no real reason to use them any more. |

Fifteen quid! Holy mackerel... should we pass the hat around and help you out? Or maybe you could just sell the Royal jewels There go any ideas I had of living in the UK for a while. What is it in France? "Wifey" always wanted to live there for 3 months to improve her French language skills. |

I don't know about France but here in little old Denmark you have to pay customs when the invoice is more than 80 DKK ~ 11 EUR ~ 14 USD..! So if you pay let's say $20 for shipping but the stuff inside the package is free, you still have to pay 25% VAT for the $20 shipping! Yes you have to pay VAT for shipping...
Luckily most China ebay stuff gets through the system, a lot of Chinese sellers put random low numbers on the packages like $1 or $5.
Actually sometimes I wouldn't mind paying VAT and customs, but the problem is the Danish post (and others) takes a 160 DKK fee! So let's say you place an order for 100 DKK ($17.5), you have to pay 25% VAT, so we're at 125DKK, which is still okay... But then the Danish post takes a 160DKK fee and we're at 285 DKK or about $50!
So if I order from outside the EU I usually make sure the value is at or less than $14 US! |

| Oh and those LEDs are really cool, I'm thinking about ordering a bunch! I did a rotating RGB LED display (propeller type) about a year ago, but it used TLC59116 so the PCB was a bit bulky, I could make that a lot smaller with these LEDs! |

| I don't mind paying the tax either, What I object to is having to drive to the courier depot in Croydon(nobody likes having to drive to Croydon), and then having to pay their charges as well. I bought a second-hand noise generator from the USA a few years back, and by the time it landed on my bench it had pretty much doubled in price. |

Wish all these toys were available when I was doing REG LED projects. I ended up sticking a full micro behind each LED. The result was (a rather expensive) RS485 enabled pixel. Still, kept me entertained for a long long time! To date I've manually built about 130 of them.
Things we do. |

Thanks, just ordered 30 pieces. Something else to put on the pile of shattered dreams.
(but now I can dream in color) |

Almost correct ...
DK text for OP
http://www.toldpriser.dk/toldregler
If the goods value is less than 80 dkk , then you're not eglible to pay any VAT , even if the value including shipping is more than 80 dkk. (DK-TAX lost in court).
But if the goods is more than 80 dkk , you have to pay VAT of the full service , meaning both goods value & shipping cost. And DK-mail charges 160 dkk for handling the VAT for you
I wish i was in OZ .... or even UK.
As the max for DK is 14$ i sometimes have to order 5 x something , wait until seller says it has been shipped , and then order 5x the same once more.
This is only doable on items with free shipping , like a lot on AliExpress.
The VAT i cal live with , but the £17 fee for DK-Mail to handle the VAT is ridicoulous.
DK & SE mail has merged into one company , and in SE it costs the half in fees. SE also have 25% VAT , but DK-Mail says it's more complicated in DK , and that's why its twice the price
I'd say it's because DK-Mail was 100% owned by the government , and was running at losses. So DK-Mail asked the government to be allowed to raise all kind of fees. And guess what ... Nobody rejected.
Even though its a Monopoly , where the government normally are quite restrictive with fees.

Ah, I didn't know that, it used to be 80 DKR including shipping! Now I know I can order stuff as long as the value of the goods is less than 80 DKR even if I have to pay a lot in shipping!
I have always tried to stay below the 80 DKR / $14 limit, including shipping..! |
