Atmel Studio 6, Windows 7 64bit, XMEGA32A4U.

My debugger occasionally hangs when starting a debugging session, it seems to hang when it is in the middle of programming. I need to cycle the power in order to make it work again.

When it does finish programming and it starts debugging, it works ok.

Any ideas on how to get it to work consistently?

I'm currently using Atmel Studio 6.0 build 1843.
Where can I download the new patch?

Look in the extension manager of AS6 - it should appear as an update in the gallery. I'd strongly suggest updating the extension gallery itself first as this fixes some potential download issues, after which you can move on to updating AS6 itself and ASF from the extension manager.

Next question: is the firmware in the JTAG fully up-to-date?

I got similar problems:
WIN7 64bit
AS6 build 1843
JTAGICE mkII driver 10.1.1.0
WinDriver 10.2.1.0

Starting debug sessions is a fragile thing. Works or not. Turnaround times ~50 secs (10 for compile, 40 for d/l and start debugger).
When downloading the AVR firmware to the JTAGICE, it stops time and again and pauses, sometimes AS6 cancels with a timeout msg.

And here's my solution:
It's the HARDWARE!
It's the USB-Hub.
It's a ground problem.
I will go into investigations, to make it short:
I have different ground levels on different USB connectors. And another ground on my digital storage oscilloscope.
Ground currents between these different grounds range from 2mA up to ~50mA(!).

If i remove the hub's external power supply and remove the DSO's ground: Everything works fine. Download FW & start debug: 15 secs.

HTH
Regards

Andi
