OK,
Who here knows the name of the largest electronic component/assembly supplier in the world and which country they are based in? (I read this in a magazine so it must be true). The answer was quite a surprise to me because, to be honest, I'd never heard of them!
They supply components used in iPad, iPhone, Kindle, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 amongst others.
(if you don't know don't just Google - that'd just be cheating).

EDIT: Ok I did just Google and Wikipedia confirms what I'd read (so it really really must be true if Wikipedia says so!). |

OK, what does "supplier" mean?
EE Times sez that Avnet is the largest electronics distributor; $16.6B in 2009.
The Wikipedia article isn't clear on the volumes, and what is an "electronic component" vs. manufacture/assembly of some of the products you mentioned. |

It's in terms of revenue and this company had a revenue of $44.7bn in 2009. The next nearest to them in the same business was Flextronics with $21.78bn in 2009. |

I win - confirmed my first thought through Google. Not surprised given the international noise they got in the news regarding the need to install "anti-suicide nets" on their buildings to preserve their staff.

Not really - the only reason I know about them is the HUGE amount of bad press they got last year, regarding the sub-standard working conditions, suicidal workers, etc.
The upshot of all the press coverage is that every article started out with "...who produce and assemble X for companies Y, Z, A, B, etc." so that's how I know how large they are.

I would argue that they aren't a component supplier. Can you buy lm324s from them?
By the way, in case you haven't heard, Mike Daisey's "monologue" regarding said labor issues has been withdrawn as fictional.

Being that I'm working with them on a current project - the answer to this question was pretty easy
I did debate a little between them and Flextronics, but my gut was that Flex was #2. |

I suppose it depends what you call a "component". Would you call a 16x2 LCD a "component" for example or are the only real components there the PCB, the LCD glass, the pixel drivers, the HD44780 and so on.
Having said that I think they do produce things like R's and C's for their own internal use for example. They also have a subsiduary producing interboard connectors that I'm guessing dwarfs someone like Molex.
Interesting to read that at one of their factories (aka "iPad city") they have 230,000 employees and at another site there are 120,000 workers. Apparently they have 610,000 employees in total. That is electronics on a pretty massive scale!
Fortune 500 list them as the 112'th largest company in the world (2010). Oh and in 2010 it was $59.3bn revenue in fact with a profit of $2.29bn. |

They are known for owning assembly lines in this region, as well as laying of massively the second day their orders start to fall.
