So, I got a LinkedIn invite from someone I work with. (LinkedIn can be found here: www.linkedin.com ) I click through to add the guy to my network which I don't use most of the time. Specifically, I have never had a use for it and only check when prompted. So, I go to LinkedIn and accept the invitation. Done deal. Then a screen pops up of "People you might know." Who shows up on the front page? Bob Gardner. The only interaction I have had with Bob is through Avrfreaks and a couple of direct emails. How that association was made through LinkedIn I do not know. I find it a little scary. No offense Bob, I did not link you in.

Linkedin, Facebook etc. are just garbage. Tell them nothing and don't accept any invitations.

I think I made a mistake of linking to some family member and a few other people I know, now it's continous spam to link to people I don't know and don't care to know as we have nothing in common.

And "deleting" your account doesn't work either, once in you are always in. It's just information mining for the naive...like me Embarassed ....

I've been invited to link with someone to whom I've only communicated via email. Clearly my email provider is selling my info. Not sure I like it.

I'm on LinkedIn. But I try to avoid FaceBook. Not overly fond of the constantly changing Privacy Policies.

But I've found that LinkedIn is useful for business contacts. I don't fault anyone for not using them.

I'm also on Linked In.

I ignore the eMails about people I might know or might want to know...

I occassionally link to others I do know, but I don't use it for much.

A couple of years ago I somehow got on a religious list and started getting Facebook invites out the waz. I tried to get Facebook to stop and they ignored me until I threatened them with a lawsuit if they didn't stop sending invites to my email address. They stopped.

I have a couple of programmer dudes I used to work with at ECC in my linkedin list, but I dont think I tried to reel in the Someguy. Maybe because I use my name as my email makes me more friendable?

I too have a linkedIn account and I wish I never had the damned thing. The spam, and so and so has 'connected' or 'linked to' etc. Sounds like cyber porn. GREAT you "linked up". NEXT!

To me it appears to be some shallow form of making one look bigger than they really are. In the circles I work in(most are squares actually) Everyone knows everyone so why bother.
I found it totally annoying that a sales rep I spoke with for about 15minutes posted about our 'intense and in-depth" meeting and sent a linkedin request to me for all the world to see. I spoke with this chick over the telephone for fifteen minutes and it warranted a blog?

Whatever. Oh, what was the topic again? Wink

I'm on Linkedin only so that I'm visible to potential employers; I don't do any social stuff there. My majority of my contacts are ex-colleagues; no family stuff whatsoever.

It's offered me Eivind as a link - and I think Eric, too - though I'm one of those people who think there's a difference between 'friend' and 'acquaintance'. This is a bit hard to explain - put it down to English reserve: While I'd be happy to accept either of those gentlemen as friends I don't think I have had enough direct contact with either to suddenly leap out at them and say 'be my friend'!

I am obviously not a child of the internet generation.

You can ask LinkedIn about how it associated Uncle Bob with you, IIRC.

I see the reason why companies have to do it these days. *Personally*, I try to avoid FaceBook.

Care to elaborate?

Personally I find it ridiculous to become "friends" with a company.

And why would any sane engineer get his info from hardware suppliers from a "social site"?

Since the freaks are all friends, how about sending me a short list of my other friends in the 328xx zip code around me?

Well, it's like what we talked about in the previous thread. It seems mostly University students that are going to be involved in FB. It's mostly about sharing news, events, projects...

I agree with you about "any sane engineer". You don't get detailed product information from a social site.

But there's still some interesting stuff on the social sites, too. I went looking through the Arduino Blog recently, and there's some cool stuff there.

We already talked about that, Bob. If I did have that information, I couldn't give it out to you anyway.

Family Trees are bound to have nephews and uncles. It is the more distant relatives that are harder to track.

For the mystery to be solved, just search for "facebook shadow profile" (Facebook is the main culprit, but others do it to). The gist of it is each time your friends mention you or let the sites root through their own personal details that contain you, the site is able to infer more and more information about you. The end-game is that the site is able to mine everything it needs to know about you to build a base profile, even without your consent or interaction.

Interesting. And scary.

I wonder how this would hold up if Facebook did this in Sweden (I suppose for Swedish law to hold, the server would have to be in Sweden). Swedish law prohibits maintaining databases with personal information without a license from the authority "datainspektionen" under certain circumstances. One such circumstance that requires a license is if the register contains (my translation follows)
Quote:
data on persons who lack the connection to the body responsible for the database that follows from membership, employment, customer-relation or any comparable circumstance

For those of you fluent in the Swedish language, the text of the law is here (my amateurishly translated quote is of 2§3.): http://www.notisum.se/rnp/sls/lag/19730289.htm .

Apart from that marginal information I have this soapbox speech:

People! It is time to start fighting back! Use FireFox and install the NoScript addon. Apart from making your surf slightly safer you will deny the data harvesting through e.g. google-analytics. We must be many for the action to be successful. Join me today!

You mean then that if I knew your address in Sweden I could not Google it and look at you house from several angles, look at you back yard, see how many trees you have growing, the rusting Volvo in the driveway etc.? Smile

Couldn't somebody build a bot that could crawl all the AVRFeaks pages and do exactly the same sort of thing? Did any of you really think this isn't or couldn't be done? If you are on the Internet you might just as well be writing to a billboard on the main highway. If you want privacy, what are you doing using the least private thing ever invented? Its like a naked woman walking down the street glaring at every body and saying, 'quit looking at me!'

Sometimes openness and nakedness is used as a protest (Lady Godiva, modern day protesters using her method). An in-your-face way to bring light to dark.

I see it diferently.

Suppose you decide to take a walk around town every day. How would you feel if someone started following you as soon as you leave your house, walking one step behind you watching every move? Is stalking OK?
