Hi All
Just woundering people experience of sourcing non ATMEL components from China,HK and Tiawan? Such as MOSFETs,DIODE,LDOs.
They seems to be about 20-30% cheaper?
There are also good delvery rates as well.
Some LDO are very cheap as well, maybe $0.10.
Just wanted to know what people thought? |

you can be lucky and find a dealer that sells the real parts, but You are long enough around here to also know the stories about badly or non working parts to be received.
So I guess it is a gable when you order the first time. When you receive good stuff then I guess it might be safe.
Up till now I have only ordered things from dealextreme they do not have a lot components though. |

Hit or miss.
I waited for weeks for some parts that I paid for express shipping on, only to get he wrong parts.
One time I ordered some breadboard jumpers. They had little pins on the ends so they went into the breadboard easily. Looked like a good idea, price was right so I ordered 50 assorted lengths.
A few weeks later my postal carrier actually knocked on my door. He informed me that I came very close to having postal police(yes they exist) visiting my home because the pakage I got from China raised a bunch of red flags(no pun) in the post office because of a stench of mothballs and petroleum.
The dog did not indicate anything was wrong so they let it go through, but they were not kidding about the smell. I threw them out immediately, and left a negative review on amazon. The vendor emailed me later in poor english that I should have consulted them on how to write the review so they would look better.
Edit: SPELLING!
You get what you pay for. |

My Chinese born board stuffer got some "cheap" components for a job (not mine) a few years ago when the shortages were on. As he can speak the language he thought he was safe.....some 30% failed at 1st power up, then quite some % failed in the field which he had to fix.
Very EXPENSIVE cheap parts!! |

Well I guess I think I will stay away from the suppliers over there.
I got a run of 1K boards, its best to stick with mouser, digikey etc and try to negotiate a better production price. At least this way I know I got good stuff.
I have not had much experience with distributors over there, but it seems a lot middle people buying and selling.
I think the only components I will import with be some LDO. I got some experience with a Twianise company that does its own fab work. They are much cheaper then from big guys. I have used them.

| My previous company used to buy almost all parts in the Far East and we manufactured in PRC but this was because we had an office in Hong Kong who could sort the wheat from the chaff and were "on the ground" to research who were the trustworthy suppliers. If you are serious then I wonder if anyone offers any kind of agency service doing a similar job in HK? That might be worth researching rather than approaching component suppliers directly (which is going to be very "hit and miss"). |

I agree.
I got 3 trusted manufactures so far
1. For LDOs and battery charger. They sent me samples to try,
2. Connectors, whom I met a electronica exibition in Germany
3. Power sheilded inductors for DC-DC. They sent me free samples as well.
I just need to source things like caps and diodes, leds.
My core components like Atmel, Fairchild loadswitch, will be done here, as we get good pricing and can buy Atmel components in batch rather then in one big job lot. |

Not sure, possibly some microcontrollers. I think he paid about half the price that other suppliers were selling them for.
Remember that this guy has been doing this sort of work for more than 15 years, so not a newbee.
As far as ebay is concerned I was very worried when I had to send a company in HK about AU$4,000.00 for some 6,000 RGB LEDs for a project a while ago. Fortunateky for me the comapny was ok and only had minimal failures and they offered to replace the dead LEDs. |

Anyone used Future Electronics.
I find there price very compative to far east pricing, as well as less risky and lower purchase amount. |

So far I have taken approx 24K LEDs cant complain.
Single colour ( red blue orange infra red) only LEDs.
Last batch of 6K had about ten pieces which failed. |
