Most "free stuff" on Android market has embedded adverts or is just a "trial" version with only the first few levels.

As an example I just downloaded their "Tap Safari" to my phone. Their business model is "interesting". The game itself runs on the concept of "gold coins" and "gold stars". If I don't have enough I can go to Android Market and pay $1.99 to buy 368 of these virtual gold coins. So far my two mice are just expecting their first baby but apparently I have to wit 4 minutes until the income from their attraction in the safari park delivers my next 20 gold coins. I can see how an impatient kid might spend $1.99 on Dad's google account to get lots of gold quickly!

If virtual mice have a 4 minute virtual gestation and 10 babies each time, how many mice do you have in one day ?

Or do you need to buy virtual baby milk?

David.

Ah well the gestation seems to be only 60 seconds so if you don't mind opening a "mouse farm" I imagine you could make a ton of gold and even sell some back! (probably not)

Many free games are adware. The put ads in the software to get you to buy something else.

This is called free-to-play. You can play the game and get through it without buying anything (or at least a well implemented free-to-play game), but you can pay real cash to get through faster. Or with some games, particularly multi-player games, you can buy "prestige" items. These are things that don't change gameplay, they only change look.

With all the press on piracy/id theft etal. I would not be surprised if these freebies were a form of spyware.

I know Android Market is not policed like iTunes but I highly doubt this. This particular game did not ask for any kind of Android permissions when installing.

But with security flaws like the ones on the HTC models, your app can make simple requests (network?) and get access to all the personal information on the phone.

Or maybe like Angry Birds, it shows you advertisements in the corner.

Just a warning to others. Do not download any of these games. It's not that they are a security compromise (well I don't think but it is kind of coincidental my Hotmail account - that my Android knows about - was also "hacked" on the same day) it's simply that this is the "app you cannot kill". The idea is that it's growing animals in the background (think "Tamagotchi"!) so even when you switch from the app it pops up an icon on your status bar from time to time. I had to use a Task Manager app to kill it as the user interface has no obvious Quit/Exit/Kill option. I will be uninstalling shortly.

(and if I thought this was the thing that sent "money making" spam to everyone in my Hotmail contacts I would be more than a little upset!)

I suppose one could get really aggressive and dissect the thing to see what it does. Wonder if you can do that with the developer software.
