My AVRISP mkII is not recognized by AVR Studio 4.19.
I have:
-read other forum threads
-installed AVR Jungo USB Installer from Atmel Beta site
-attempted to install AVRSIP mkII driver through control panel using "Add Legacy Hardware"
Still, only one Jungo driver is visible (WinDriver). I think this is related to the problem. Has anybody encountered this exact circumstance?
Some additional info:
Using Win 7 x64.
I have not upgraded the firmware for the AVRISP mkII because I'm not sure if that's necessary. |

Does the AVRISP-MKII light up when you plug it in? If so, what color is the light? If it is flashing yellow, the device is in bootloader upgrade mode, and you will need to first update the firmware.

That means it should appear in the Device Manager, either as a Jungo "AVRISP-MKII" entry, or as an "Unknown Device". Can you see an unknown device entry?

Yes, the AVRPSI MKII appears as a USB-Serial controller and Windows complains that it can't find a driver.
I've uninstalled & used "Add Legacy Hardware" to install windrvr6 from /usb64. This causes a second WinDriver device (with a "wrong driver" complaint") to appear under Jungo, but still no AVRISP device.
More details: I also have an STK500 with the same problem. I'm using USB-Serial cables (CH340) to talk to the STK500. This setup worked fine previously but at one point the STK500 stopped "Autoconnecting" seemingly out of nowhere. (by "the same problem", I mean I'm unable to connect) |

Wait, is this a blue or a gray box? The AVRISP-MKII has a USB connector and not a serial connector like the original mark I AVRISP. When plugged in, the AVRISP-MKII shouldn't display as a USB to Serial converter. If it's blue and it appears as a USB-to-Serial, it's probably a knockoff device that is incompatible with Studio.

| It does have a USB connector. The color is blueish-gray. I think it's mis-recognized as a USB-serial, it has nothing to do with serial ports from what I can see. |

Somewhat definitive check: what does it present its VID and PID as? You can find this information in the device's property window in the Device Manager screen.

Under Hardware Ids, I see:
USB\VID_067B&PID_2303&REV0300
USB\VID_067B&PID_2303
Thanks for the assistance. |

Dean,
I think you missed this:

In Win7 try to install the driver in compatibility mode for the MKII
If the usb/serial adapter is one of those cables that has a usb connector on one end and a 9pin on the other, and you paid $5.00usd for it out of China throw it out. I bought one and had the same problem with my STK500.
I got fed up with fighting with all of it and made an ATMEL partition on the hard drive and installed WinXPPRO and dual boot the pc. |

| More info: neither of these devices work on a Win XP x86 laptop either. My guess is the STK500 is just broken/dead (I may have touched it with static). The AVRISP MKII gives the same result on the XP machine: misclassified as USB-Serial. |

It's pretty hard to kill an STK500
Is the serial port on the XP machine part of the motherboard or is it a dongle/cable? I have mine on a serial port that is part of the motherboard and no issues.
It is also hard to kill an MKII.
My suggestion is to do the following.
plug the MKII into a spare usb jack other than the one you are using now. When windows finds it, go through the motions. If it fails to load up properly, in the device tree select it, and uninstall it from the system.
Then unplug the MKII and don't touch it.
Next go into add/remove programs and uninstall the AVR Jungo application.
Uninstall avrSTUDIO
Restart the machine
Reinstall Studio WITHOUT connecting ANYTHING
Install the jungo driver WITHOUT connecting anything.
When all is installed restart teh pc
When it comes back up start studio, connect the stk500 and try to connect to it If this fails go through the firmware upgrade procedure. That usually gets it back online.
Once you have that then connect the MKII and go through the same motions as the stk500. connect and firmware upgrade
EDIT: Do all of this on the XP machine |

I'm using a USB-Serial cable (I have 2 identical ones, never had a problem in the past with either, even on Win 7 x64). I've reset them to "default" (9600 baud, 1 stop bit, no parity) which always worked in the past.

I don't think the MKII is dead but I'm not sure what's happening. I didn't touch the MKII at all until the STK500 stopped working and there wasn't any static around the MKII.

Tried this; when I manually select the driver in Jungo
on the USB machine, it says "this file does not contain information about the device". In Win 7, I get an "Error 31" when I manually select the Jungo driver for the MKII.

I just tried updating the firmware on the STK500 from a fresh AVR Studio install on my XP machine. AVR Prog: "No support board found". Even when I specifically connect to the port I know the USB-Serial is on, the connection fails.
I haven't tried upgrading the firmware on the MKII yet. It seems unlikely that the firmware on both boards would spontaneously fail. Is this more likely than static damage? Especially for the STK500 since it's not protected and I often touch the board. |

Also, I just tried running AVRJungoUSB and wdreg in compatibility mode, as admin. No changes.
Do MKIIs normally have AVR molded into the plastic? I noticed that in a picture online. Mine does not have AVR molded in but it does have a barcode on the bottom that says AVRISP. |

If that is from the AVRISP-MKII, then it's not an Atmel AVRISP-MKII but a knock-off (Atmel's VID is 0x03EB). Most likely it is based on the AVR910 protocol and thus incompatible with AVRStudio.

| Thanks everyone, looks like you were right. I ordered a new AVRISP and it worked first try. Upon closer inspection this other thing has 10 pins on the header too. |
