My buddy Geoge was the Butt of that joke. He's from Kenya or somewhere, but he didn't have two parents that were born in the US, so he isn't qualified to be the Big Dude according to Grandpa Adams and Uncle Jefferson.

It is not clear to me, as to what was in the mind of those who made that recent change of what is considered OK, other than cats, horseback riding and BBQ recipes.

From a logical point of view, one has to assume that as politics has been specifically removed from that list, by it's absence it belongs in the set of all other exclusions which are not specifically mentioned Ie. religion, gender issues, breastfeeding, race issues, football, cricket, baseball , boxing, cock fighting etc. etc. all of which might cause offense to someone. (So might the inclusion of non-kosher or non-vegetarian BBQ recipes and jokes etc.).

As I mentioned in my previous post, anything not mentioned specifically as being OK, by implication must be taboo... dogs, guinea pigs, cars planes, boats , breakfast, dinner & lunch recipes (other than BBQ'd), art, bush-walking etc.

This is ridiculous of course! So, I suggest that the current wording should be changed to but specify the exclusion rather than the inclusions.

It wasn't clear to anyone else either, which was why the "you're all doing a horrible job (for free)" post in the Moderator forum was such a surprise. I believe Eric has modified the description now to try to discourage political discussions in the future so we all remain civil.

Do you Atmel dudes have a big meet-n-greet somewhere on planet earth every year or so? Might be nice for the Norskies to meets the Cal dudes and the Colorado dudes face to face. Course, unless you had nametags, no one would know who the other dudes were, except for the ozzie. The one dude that is suffering from oxygen deprivation seems to be completely invisible.

It is clear to me why it was done Dean, but the current wording does not cover the situation to a newbie, who does not know of the desire to restrict political discussion and could easily start a political discussion in the future, as there is no specific exclusion against it.
Johan's assumption(?) that religious matters are still OK should be covered along with racial, sexual, religious etc.
It is like a switch statement with inadequate cases & no default case. Wink

I know, I know - PM EW and see if he can change it again. While I can technically do it I'm not sure if I'm supposed to do it and frankly the site backend is so full of broken bits and scary buttons I'm afraid to mess with it too much.

My question was not so seriously meant that you need to straighten it out for my sake.

Personally I believe in cats, the true deities that has ruled the world since it was created on the 13th of February 2001. We should vote them in to rule our countries. If they start to misbehave, well cook'em and eat'em on the beach of Keynesia. I'll have the rump of the fattest cat, please.

After you skin them, they look the same as a rabbits. They taste sort of half way between koala & possum!

I personally enjoy it when I get told to RTFM StupidA$$ sometimes. I actually breakdown and look it up. Gonna miss it. Why doesnt Atmel have the moderators sit as judges(like American Idol/x-factor, whatever) and decide if the question/statement/rant goes into general population, the shredder, or into a special place called 'whup-a$$'.

I told him to do it after I'd resigned as a moderator. I said it was the least he could do to avoid encouraging politic or religious discussion. The previous text only mentioned politics but if it had mentioned religion I'm sure Eric would have removed that too.

The point being that this board and specifically the O-T forum are polluted by pointless, vitriolic arguments in which entrenched camps are never going to persuade the other to change their views and they inevitably decay into ad hominem attacks and the use of strong language which is not the sort of thing you want on a board aimed at teaching a 12 year old how to program an Arduino or whatever.
Quote:

Count yourself lucky. Basically Eric tore us all off a strip for having let this board fall into the vitrolic, unfriendly state it had got itself into. While my initial reaction was to be slightly peeved (to the point where I decided to give up being a moderator) I came round to see Eric/(Atmel management's) point which is the reason for the sticky announcement at the top of AVR Forum.

This Off Topic forum is supposed to be for "fun" things and does not benefit from grown adults acting like 5 year olds in a playground. For that there are many Usenet groups and other website/forums where you can go to have those political or religious arguments.

So here's to a happier future here (for all of us - including the ones who#d offered to moderate!)

Don't agree. Even with moderators this place still turned into a site that thousands of people are actually scared to post on because of the kind of replies they were getting. What advantage would be had by moving topics so that the OP would deliberately be insulted. As I said elsehwere, if you have nothing positive to say then don't.

The change that has occurred is that Atmel have realised what an important resource this board is so while they had "left things to it" they now want to clean up the act and make it a happy, friendly place for beginner so ask ANY kind of question without fear of being insulted. If anyone doesn't like the more involved stance Atmel want to take then I guess there are plenty of other web sites one could choose to visit instead.

Remember that this site is run/financed by Atmel so it's their call how it operates.

Cliff, I'm sorry to see you step down as a moderator. I always thought you did your duties with a light touch and gentlemanly finesse, with an occasional glimpse of the frustrated realist behind the curtain.

Now you can test my theory that the best part of being a moderator would be when you resigned.

Sorry to hear that Cliff, you were on the ball as far as I was concerned, but you can now relax a little more , play electronics, take the YF flying & enjoy the cats.

I could never understand that it was permitted, nay encouraged even, in the first place, by suggesting in that in the title.

In any human endeavor you will find conflict and with an open invitation to discuss the common no no's, you are asking for trouble.

Amateur radio, has had the same issues for over 90 years and
those subjects whilst not illegal, are avoided. Amateur radio has the advantage that when the radio waves diminish the words are gone, not so with the digital word.

So my suggestion is repeated, that the wording be tidied up further.

It seems to me that along with Uncle Bob's good friend George, guns seem to be the most inflammatory topic. Religion per se gets mild responses in comparison.

DocJC, might have to confirm this, but I think they cause huge blood loss & trauma rather than inflammation! Wink

You gentlemen misunderstood - I initially resigned because Eric accused us all of a crap job even though I thought we weren't doing too bad. But I came round to his way of thinking so withdrew the threat and joined his cause to try and make things better here. Getting rid of politics, religion and (thank God) gun control can only be a good thing.

The interesting and unique aspect of the old avrfreaks offtopic forum was the ability to get a compare and contrast on an issue like God Given Rights, freedom, tyrrany, when government becomes oppressive or confiscatory, from a peer group of experienced engineers on 5 or 6 other continents. A Very Good Big Picture view. Before I discovered AVRfreaks, I had assumed I would never ever converse with an engineer from St Petersburg Russia or Teheran Iran. If communication is the answer to getting along with other cultures, cutting off the communication seems like a Real About Face. Where I think we really need the increased communication is with mainland China. Seems like this forum had the capability to provide that link. After a certain back and forth of cussing and ad hominem attacks, the actual facts and opinions of the differing parties bubble to the surface to be discussed. It was very interesting to me, and after a decade of reading other engineer's tales, I though I knew how to really know when they were really telling what they believed. It will be hard to cultivate another international panel discussion like this one was. I just hope it makes my Atmel stock keep chugging on up.

Surely he meant:
Quote:
Getting rid of ---, --- and (thank ---) --- can only be a good thing.

Perhaps applying the Uncle Bob Redaction Technique [tm]:
Quote:
Getting rid of George, George and (thank George) George can only be a good thing.

Someone should write an encryption and decryption program that would make our off-off-topic posts appear to the uninitiated to be about cats, horseback riding and BBQ. A Firefox add-on would be nice.
