Dear All,
I am trying to find an AVRDUDE to run it on WINDOWS XP.
Download available at all leading download sites.
But, once download and unzipped the horror beigns. There is no .exe file.
The http://savannah.gnu.org/ is the most confusing site I have ever seen. Cannot find the location to download AVRDUDE or any other software on this page.
After digging various sites endlessly we find this location http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/avrdude/ ,which has an endless list of downloadable file, but for what purpose its not clear at all.
I also learnt that FSF FRESS SOFTWARE FOUNDATION IS FUNDED BY UNESCO, this is even more shocking.

The forum post mentioned below states that the best way to run AVRDUDE is with WINAVR, which again is a quite confusing software in itself. More such tragedies of AVRDUDE is well documented in this year 2004 post :

http://www.avrfreaks.net/index.php?name ... mp;start=0

My larger question is why can't there be a single page, a single winzip file, with an executable .exe file, link for downloading AVRDUDE?

Or if anyone has a tutorial for installing AVRDUDE, kindly oblige.

Even better, if anyone can suggest better options to AVRDUDE itself?
Phew!

Thanks!

I agree that there could be binary Windows releases, but Windows isn't the primary platform (sadly) thus sources are deemed good enough - and to be fair, it's quite easy to compile it under a *nix OS.

If you install the latest WinAVR, the avrdude EXE file will be located in "C:\WinAVR-20100110\bin\".

Dean its a privilege to be talking to you, I have seen the enormous task you have done with LUFA, and I appreciate the same!!!
I wonder how can a person achieve such gigantic task at such a young age. I am sure you must be very rich Wink

Besides, What are the alternates?

Not "buying a yacht" rich yet, but I'm working on it. I've got a job at Atmel as of next year, so perhaps that will bring me fame and fortune Wink.

To getting AVRDude binaries, or getting rich? For the former, I don't know of any other easy Windows binary distributions. For the latter, a life of humble begging.

The easiest way to get avrdude for Windows is to install WinAVR. If you don't want to do that then use the attached .zip in which I've cherry picked all the files you'll need from a WinAVR installation.

Q : whats common between dean camera and julius assange?
A : Both belong to Australia and are ace coders!!!
(Strange but true - julius assange has been a hacker, then an ethical hacker, and is also an advocate of "free software"!)

Sir,
Kindly forgive my ignorance. I am not sure whats in destiny, but am pretty sure that electronics is my passion, where my heart is. And I will always be a humble student.
I have been using MS VISUAL STUDIO for some time for writing programmes in C#.
Even though its wrong to make a comparison, but still, comparing this with WINAVR, I feel that even if WINAVR would have been 1 percent as efficient as MS visual studio, the mankind(and the corporates) would have saved thousands of hours spent on coding with WINAVR.

What programmer are you using? If it's an official Atmel one (or if it clones the official protocol) you might want to try out AVRStudio 5, which is built on Visual Studio. That will allow you to retain your VS knowledge and code/program from within the one IDE without worrying about makefiles and/or command line programmer software.

Utter rubbish - GCC is at least as efficient as Microsoft compilers?!? To suggest it's out by two orders of magnitude is just plain crap.

Are you, perhaps, talking about the eye candy of an IDE? If that's what you need as a crutch then surely AS5 (with a bundled copy of GCC) delivers this? It is, after all, just Visual Studio 2010.

AVR ISP MKII from ATMEL purchased from Farnell. Currently I use AVR STUDIO 4 just to load the .hex file to the AVR.
Dean, Thanks for your guidance! I will try it.

So why in God's name don't you use it as an IDE for the hugely inefficient avr-gcc??

For my sins I use it all the time. (I actually prefer 2008 to 2010 in fact). Sure there's "intellisense" but you can get that from any decent source browsing editor. Other than that it's bloated crap. For a programmer surely it's ultimately the quality of the generated code that matters.

(then again I started using "ed" in CP/M to edit 8080 assembler so consider even Notepad to be fine for editing code).

Newcomer you are! You didn't even once toggle the bootstrap loader into a PDP8 via the front panel switches? Now THAT's what i call comfort when it comes to entering data into a computer...

Ah well we could play the Monty Python "Four Yorkshiremen" game as the first computer I built/used was actually an RCA COSMAC 1802 based board with just 256 bytes of memory. It had no firmware whatsoever but instead used a DMA auto-increment feature of the CPU to write bytes entered on a 0-9,A-F hex keypad into successive memory locations - if you typed even one nibble incorrectly you had to start from scratch at location 0. This was about 1978-79.

When I used to work with Microsoft UK I lent them this and my ZX80 for a temporary "museum of computers" exhibition they were putting on and the b**t**ds went and lost both Sad

In Australia a chap at Deakin University did a improved COSMAC.
It used the CHIP8 programming language borrowed from the COSMAC, but it had a reasonable keypad handler so that you could edit etc. It was known as the DREAM6800 and was based on the MC6802. IIRC it had 512 bytes of RAM which included the video RAM. It was great fun & my then 3 year olds favourite toy circa 1979-1980. Also loaned out & now lost!

Mr. Superconductor, you'll be pleased to know there is an SVN up to date AVRDUDE zip for Windows (XP->7,32/64bit compatible) at http://helix.air.net.au It has a bias for FTDI devices but it should work with everything else.

It's currently at v5.11 SVN1068 so there have been some bug fixes since 5.11 came out.

Does anyone still use getio? I know it breaks on Win7 and 64 bit systems. Would there be any interest in having parallel port bit bangers work in 64 bit windows? I am thinking of replacing getio with http://www.highrez.co.uk/Downloads/InpOut32/default.htm Any takers?
